Physician Education: Stroke Boot Camp for Residents
Hospital:
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA


Key
Stakeholder
Overview:
750 beds; 42 acute stroke/month
University setting; residency program
Stroke Team, Nurse Practitioner
There was a desire to bring each year’s new residents quickly up
to speed on stroke protocol so as not to exacerbate the annual
“dip” in performance observed each July.
A mandatory “stroke book camp” was developed to expedite the
process with definite improvement noted once the new residents
were educated.
Process/
Timeline:
The stroke team chose a structured boot camp, over a limited time
frame to meet their subspecialties educational requirements and
to insure compliance with the indicators of care.
The whole stroke team is involved:
 Attending MD’s provide the majority of lectures and are
responsible for updating these sessions as necessary.
 Senior resident participate in this program.
 The stroke NP provides sessions regarding compliance
with indicators of care for JC and GWTG. This includes details
on appropriate documentation.
 Each resident receives a miniature stroke book that
includes stroke protocols, indicators of care etc. (pocket size)
Implementation: Conducted every July, for past 10 years
 5-6 one-hour sessions; over 2-3 weeks
Education:
Stroke boot camp
 Sessions include
o Introduction to stroke (tips, guidelines for data
collection/documentation)
o Radiology (studies to order; process)
o Acute/TPA management in ED
o Secondary prevention (includes medications)
 Part of mandatory, annual resident education curriculum;
senior residents add valuable insight based on experience
 Lectures given by attending MD’s
o Updated annually to incorporate new guidelines
o Incorporates actual hospital case-studies
Stroke rotation
 Residents, including ED residents also have option for

doing a stroke rotation; particularly helpful for familiarizing
ED resident with other aspects of patient care and inhouse strokes
Opportunity to discuss changes to protocol on rounds
Nurses
 Invited to attend Boot Camp
 Stroke update for nurses in May (Neuroscience Nurse’s
Week)
 Gateway Program: acute care management for ER and
neurology nurses, and others new to nursing
Tools:
“Miniature” stroke book for residents contains:
 Contact numbers
 Different scales used
 Inclusion / exclusion criteria
 Research protocols
Impact:
Improved GWTG familiarity and documentation compliance; as
well as heightened comfort level delivering stroke protocol



Advice:
See definite improvement once new residents are
educated and they know that their documentation will be
checked
Residents become familiar with key players (stroke NP,
key MD leaders) that they will be interacting with.
Residents know who to go to for support and appreciate
the efforts of all involved.
Senior residents add valuable input based on experience
on units
Module should ideally
 Be online so all shifts can more easily take advantage of
learning opportunity
 Offer CME credit
