Most deciduous & coniferous forests with mature trees and along riversides in broad-leaved evergreen Oak forests.
Larvae found in damp, fungus-ridden decaying wood of Abies, Fagus & Quercus trunks and stumps, usually beneath the bark,
and especially in decaying tree roots.
Usually seen running around on leaves and foliage of bushes and trees, gleaning the leaves of pollen and possibly honey due.
FLOWERS VISITED: Bramble, Butterburr, Compositae, Hawthorn, Raspberry, Sycamore, Umbels.
FLIGHT PERIOD:

ALT. RANGE:
0m. < 0m. – 150m. > 350m. (Scot.)
DISTRIBUTION:
(E,I,S,W) - Widespread from the Borders & Galloway right through to the Inverness area,
EUROPE:
but very few records from north of the Great Glen and none from the Western Isles, orkney or Shetland.

COMMENTS:
This widespread but localised species does not appear to be declining or increasing whereever there is suitable mature woodland habitat.
