Technology Radar Element Description Open Applications Group Integration Specification (OAGIS) Abstract The specification provides a set of standardized XML messages for use throughout the supply chain. It defines a series of Business Object Definitions (BODs) to support the standardized exchange of typical messages used in B2B applications for commercial supply chain and accounting transactions. Each BOD comprises a Verb (get, show, list, process etc.) and a Noun (purchase order, shipping list, invoice, BoM etc.). Some 16 verbs and 75 nouns are defined by OAGIS 9. Messages can be tailored to meet local user requirements. Brief scenarios are provided to illustrate usage of most BODs. EDS used selected nouns from OAGIS 8 as an integration model for the UK MoD Supply Enterprise Information Architecture (EIA) hub. OAGIS 8 has also been applied to a few messages linking the Log Info System, LITS, to the EIA Hub on the Tornado ATTAC project. OAGIS 9 differs from the earlier versions due to alignment with the ebXML Core Components Library (see separate blip) developed by OASIS and UN/CEFACT, which is the agreed international approach for transactional messages. There has been a deliberate decision to break upward compatibility to address this alignment. The specification is freely available for download from the OAGi site (see end of document). Responsible organization Open Applications Group: a commercial standardization body, started by the major ERP system vendors, but broadened subsequently to include some major manufacturing companies. OAGi has built links to the major HR and financial XML standards development groups. Lead Organization within ASD ASD Strategic Standardization Group - contact: Samy Scemama (SCM Standards Domain WG) Other stakeholders – by function/organization ASD Customer and Product Support Committee AIA EEIC CIDX merger with OAGi Business Justification The specification is the most widely adopted of a range of international supply chain standards currently under development and is being used in exchanges between UK MoD and industry. The specification is well suited to deployment in a web service environment, and is aligned to the ebXML Core Components library, as is BoostAero. This is increasing the overlap with PLCS and other standards OAGi is extending its collaboration with other standards groups to offer a broader scope of capabilities based on a consistent framework. Recent co-operations include HR-XML for HR information, SWIFT for financial transactions, and ISA SP.95 for manufacturing management. OAGi are committed to collaboration with a joint OASIS-UN/CEEFACT initiative to develop a range of internationally recognized ebXML Core Components for ecommerce and financial transactions towards which many related standardization initiatives can progressively migrate. Deliverables New versions of OAGi Standards are continually being released. Latest (as of July 08) is version 9.3. Version X in development. Assumptions It is assumed that implementers will find ways to avoid the risk that OAGIS 9, like many other information standards, is tailored and interpreted differently by different users. Business benefits OAGIS has the potential to provide ASD members with an end-to-end supply chain data exchange/web service capability, linked to payment systems, which can automate routine demands, movements and returns across the many different IT systems involved. Since OAGIS 9.0 is built on the same library of ebXML core components as the new developments of S2000M Chapter 6.2-6.4 in Version 5.0, it should be feasible to ensure interoperation. Location in ASD SSG Framework Transactional messages within the SCM Standards Policy WG ASD SSG action plan The SSG has no action specific to the development or use of OAGIS messages. The use of core components makes it attractive to consider using OAGIS messages for trade transactions outside the scope of BoostAero and S2000M, and to ensure compatibility within that scope. The SSG will endeavour to establish common policy recommendations with the AIA. ASD SSG Status (updated) Introduced following SSG7 Impact of other Standards OAGIS 10 largely complements ISO 10303-239 (PLCS) as the former addresses the Supply Chain and the latter the technical domain. There is however overlap in content, and, increasingly, in the supported message types. Work is therefore needed to decide how these two standards will be used together. OAGIS Page 2 Revision Date 2016-09-13 Copyright © 2016 ASD Technology Radar Element Description OAGIS 10 overlaps heavily with S2000M, where there is the potential to progressively replace the messaging format with one based on ebXML. S2000M is testing the feasibility of using the BoostAero specifications, which are also aligned with ebXML, for its next generation messaging medium, as well as PLCS for its technical documentation content. Adoption Plan None at present at ASD level.
