**********************USC SCHOOL OF THEATRE********************** COURSE INSTRUCTOR 2 UNITS 62732 SECTION [email protected] E-MAIL INTERNATIONAL STYLE BALLROOM 188A JESUS FUENTES aka “JAY” SPRING 2012 SESSION MHP 101 CLASSROOM MW 7:30-8:50 TIME COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will explore various styles of ballroom dance from a social perspective, and will concentrate intensely on form, style, and choreography. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Acquaint student to various styles of music. Identify basic ballroom dance technique and terminology. Instruct both American and Latin styles of ballroom dance. Emphasis on focus, required for success in performance. Develop overall performance technique. Expand students’ horizons to different styles of social communication. Expound to students proper etiquette and decorum while dancing. GRADING: Active Participation 60% Midterm Examination 15% Final Examination 15% Term Paper 10% Final Grade CR/NCR **(Scheduled Final Time: Wednesday May 2, 2012 Location: MHP 101 Time: 7-9pm)** ASSIGNMENTS AND SCHEDULE: Students will actively demonstrate the use of ballroom dance skills through exercise and dance combinations. Students will be required to attend “Dress Up Day” which will be held on the last day of the dance, which is being taught at the time. ATTENDANCE AND TIME REQUIREMENTS: Regular attendance is mandatory. Students will be permitted 2 absences during the semester. Beginning with the 3rd absence, the grade will fall 2 points per class missed. CLASSES MAY BE MADE UP BY ATTENDING ANY OTHER 188A CLASS. TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIALS: There is no dress code; however, students should wear loose, comfortable clothing, unless otherwise instructed. NO BACKLESS SHOES!!! There is no required text. READING AND OTHER ASSIGNMENTS: Various assignments offer the student exposure to performance art, including (when possible) the attendance of dance performances. A written critique, approximately three pages, will be required. 1 **********************USC SCHOOL OF THEATRE********************** WRITTEN REPORT: A 3-4 page paper, double spaced Term Paper will be due on the on the scheduled final day. Must Include: History of A ballroom dance (ie. Tango, Cha-Cha…) and its significance or impact on society. Paper must also contain a critical analysis of the dance in either a movie or live performance featuring the dance of topic chosen. It is now mandatory for you to include the following statement on Trojan Integrity and Plagiarism in all your syllabi. Dishonesty in any form harms the individual, other students, and the School of Theatre. Therefore, USC policies on academic integrity will be enforced in this course. Papers suspected of containing plagiarized material (the unacknowledged or inappropriate use of another's ideas, wording, or images) will be verified for authenticity by the School of Theatre through internet services. As each style of dance is introduced, instruction in technique and style will build to a complete choreographed routine. A ‘Dress-Up Day’, will follow the close of each dance taught. 2
