Activities Explanation:
Sort and Graph:
Using all of the words from your Word Work list as well as
the words from your Word Hunt, create a bar graph to show how many words you
have for each sorting category.
Blue and Red Words:
Write out all of your Word Work list using blue for
each of the consonants and red for each of the vowels. Do you see the pattern?
Superman Letter:
Use each of your assigned words to write a letter to
Superman (or another super hero).
Missing Letter List:
Use all of the words from your Word Work list as well
as the words from your Word Hunt, create a list of all of your words leaving out
all of the vowels. Do you see the pattern?
Rainbow Words:
Write out all of your Word Work list with a pencil. Now go
over the letters that form the sorting pattern with a highlighter. Go over the
other letters with a different colored marker or crayon.
Add a Prefix, Add a Suffix:
Select 5 words from your Word Work list
and dig into the dictionary to find a new word which has added a prefix or a
suffix.
Word Riddles:
Select 6 words from your Word Work list and write a riddle
about the word. Be sure to use clues which describe the word pattern you are
learning. Ex: This word has two vowels in the middle, the first vowel says the long
“o” sound, the second letter is silent, the word means something you want to
achieve.
Magnetic Letter Slide:
If you have magnetic letters for your refrigerator
or a cookie sheet, place the letters that make up the word pattern at the top of
your list. Set changing letters down the column of potential words. Slide the
pattern letters down the column and record all of the words you have made.
Word Work Poetry:
Gather the words from your Word Work and any
words from your Word Hunt which have the same sorting pattern, create a poem
which uses these words as the last word of each line.
Word Pattern Reflection:

pattern(s) you are currently working on. Be sure to give examples of this pattern
from your Word Hunt.
Letter Tile Scramble:
Set out a set of letter tiles from any existing
board game. (Bananagrams or Scrabble) Using all of the words from your Word
Work list as well as the words from your Word Hunt, word as fast as you can to
flip the tiles over and make as many of your words as possible.
Scattegories:
Select one of the sorting patterns from your current Word
Work list. Randomly select a letter of the alphabet and see how many other
words can you think of that fit that sorting pattern.
Word Work Battleship:
You will need a partner and graph paper to play
this game. Use all of the words from your Word Work list as well as the words
from your Word Hunt, lay out 5 of your words into the graph paper grid. Take
turns calling out letters to “hunt” for the hidden words. Take turns trying to find
each word that has been placed on the other person’s grid.
Sticky-Note Scavenger Hunt:
Choose a text you would like to read.
Have 10 small sticky-notes ready to use. Begin reading and place a sticky note
beside any word that matches one of your Word Work patterns. You may stop
reading once you have used all 10 sticky-notes.
Word Work PowerPoint®:

PowerPoint slide which explains the word pattern that is used to spell this word.
You might use animation or clipart or give examples of other words that follow
this pattern, to help with your explanation.
Design a Poster:
Choose one of your words to create a poster which
explains the word pattern that is used to spell this word. You might use bright
colors or drawings or give examples of other words that follow this pattern, to
help with your explanation.
Write a Song:
Write a song about one of your words to explain the pattern
that is used to spell this word. You might use rhyming or repetition or give
examples of other words that follow this pattern, to help with your explanation.
Make a Word Pattern Cheer:

cheer which explains the word pattern that is used to spell this word. You might
use specific actions for the patterned portion of your word to help with your
explanation.
Word Work Match:

floor). Flip over a card and try to find another word that has the same Word
Pattern. You have made a “match” if both words use the same pattern.

words from your Word Hunt, create a chain of words in which one letter changes
with each new word. How many words can you include in each chain?
