Volcano Mapping Activity
The early Earth was completely molten but over many millions of
years the crust we now live on cooled into the land we now live on.
Beneath the crust we live on is a ‘plastic’ mantle of very hot rock. This rock
can be squeezed towards the surface and then turns into melted rock
called magma, when underground, and lava, when above ground. When
this lava comes out of the ground a volcano is born. Volcanoes do not
occur randomly around the Earth. The majority of volcanoes are found
where two pieces or plates of the Earth’s crust meet. When we look at the
locations of volcanoes around the Earth patterns emerge. Below is a list of
areas with large numbers of active volcanoes. Create a Google sheet of
these volcanoes in your district Google Drive with one column for the
Volcano name and one column for the Location. Title the sheet Volcano
Mapping Data.

Once your Google sheet is created watch this video and follow the
directions:

rth Science/Using Google Maps for Volcanoes.mp4
Now that you have created your map, add some interest by including
some pictures. Watch this video for instructions:

rth Science/Adding pictures to your map.mp4
Finally, add a link (the url) to your map on this form:

Make sure you have shared your map with Mr. Richardson at
[email protected]
Summary: Look at your map and the locations of the volcanoes you
have located. Describe any pattern you see. Are the volcanoes scattered
evenly? Do a web search for ‘patterns of volcano distribution’ and see if
you can identify and describe a pattern.
