Allied Powers: Great Britain, United States, Soviet Union, China
Axis Powers: Germany, Italy, Japan
Official beginning date: September 1, 1939
By Summer of 1940, Hitler had control of Europe with the
exception of Great Britain. 1940 was the Battle of Britain when
Hitler attempted to bomb Britain into submission. Prime Minister
Winston Churchill stated that the British would never surrender.
5. American helps Britain with the Lend-Lease Act which provided
necessary aid to help them keep fighting.
6. U.S. Declaration of War – Dec. 8, 1941
7. FDR and Churchill meet and draw up a plan to fight the war –
concentrate of defeating Hitler first, then move all forces into the
Pacific and fight all out against Japan.
8. When Germans are unsuccessful invading Britain, they decide to
invade the Soviet Union instead, even though they have signed an
agreement promising not to.
REMEMBER:
NAZIS ≠
COMMUNISTS!!! (Interesting fact: Hitler invades soviet union
on June 22, 1941, 129 years to the day that Napoleon invaded
Russia. Both were ultimately defeated!)
9. Soviet Union joins the Allies and Stalin becomes part of FDR and
Churchill’s planning team.
10.
******1943 – Italy is defeated, Mussolini is deposed and
killed and the Italians join the Allies.********
11.
D-Day – June 6, 1944 – Allied invasion of France. Goal was
to liberate France from Nazi control – very costly invasion but it
put Germany on defensive and began pushing them back across
Europe. It was the beginning of the end in Europe.
12.
Battle of the Bulge – last major German offensive in the war.
13.
V-E Day - May 8, 1945 – Victory in Europe Day. Still
celebrated in Russia – they lost more civilians than anyone else in
the war!
14.
Attention was turned to the Pacific – began a strategy called
‘island hopping’ – going from island to island and recapturing each
one from Japanese.
15.
Battle of Midway – Summer of 1942 – save Australia from
invasion by Japanese.
16.
By August of 1945 – Allies (primarily U.s. and Britain) had
pushed the Japanese almost back to Japan recapturing most all
territory including the Philippines (Douglas McArthur). Question
of a full scale invasion of the dropping of the atomic bomb.
17.
August 6, 1945 – First atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima,
Japan. August 9, 1945 – second atomic bomb dropped on
Nagasaki, Japan.
18.
V-J Day – September 2, 1945 – General Douglas MacArthur
receives the Japanese surrender.
19.
Nuremburg Trials & Tokyo War Crime Trials – trials held by
the Allied nations – first time actions that were generally accepted
as a part of war were declared crimes and their instigators tried.
Most major leaders were executed.
