Could We Live Anywhere Other Than Earth? By….Lottie Williams How can we live on Earth? (What makes it possible!?) Is there life on other planets? (In our solar system) Can human life exist elsewhere? (in the galaxy / universe) How can we live on Earth? Without the atmosphere there is no life Without the atmosphere the sun would destroy us Earths atmosphere is the “thin blue line”, it is held in place by gravity! How can we live on Earth? gravity Too Little and we’re in trouble! Gravity keeps everything on earth! Too much and we’re squashed! How can we live on Earth? We need water in liquid form We need the sun for heat & light We need the right temperature Too hot possible Too weird! Just right! Too cold How can we live on Earth? (What makes it possible!?) Is there life on other planets? (In our solar system) Can human life exist elsewhere? (in the galaxy / universe) Is there life? what does it look like? An estimated 200 billion stars in the milky way That’s 200,000,000,000 The milky way An estimated 200 billion planets in the milky way That’s 200,000,000,000 An estimated 10 billion planets in habitation zone around their star That’s 10,000,000,000 Can human life exist elsewhere? Statistically, there is a high probability of life in our galaxy In 1999 the Hubble Space Telescope estimated that there were 125 billion galaxies in the universe, Mathematical model of the universe Can human life exist elsewhere? If you multiply the number of galaxies in the universe with the number of stars in our galaxy it is almost certain that there is life in the universe conclusions • Scientifically, we are here by chance and life is delicate and fussy…we need key elements to survive • There may be other life in our solar system and we are investigating at the moment • Any alien life or habitable planets are just guesswork currently • Statistics show us that other life in the galaxy or universe is probable (mathematically almost definite!!)
