The GP
Cancer
Update
Course
A FREE one day cancer
update course by GPs for GPs and GP ST3s
GP Update have joined forces with Macmillan
Cancer Support to bring you a new course
designed to give jobbing GPs the knowledge
and inspiration they need to improve care for
their cancer patients.
Why would I want to go on a cancer course?
There are many challenges that face us! The UK performs less
well than most European countries when it comes to cancer
survival and this is a challenge for all doctors and nurses to
address. We need to aim for early diagnosis and high profile
public health campaigns and screening are changing the way
that patients present to primary care.
Cancer is changing, it is becoming a disease that many more
people survive.
• 50% of patients will survive at least 5 years from diagnosis.
• If you are a full time GP you might expect to have 70 cancer patients on your list 35 of whom will have survived more than 5 years.
Working with
Macmillan Cancer Support
• They will consult with you more often than other patients their age.
Research tells us these patients have unmet needs and suffer
physical and psychological ill health related to their cancer
diagnosis and treatment. Primary care is perfectly placed to help
them….and they would like our help!
How can GP Update help?
GPs want to stay up to date but the task is a formidable one.
Cancer is only a part of what we see day to day (but think….in
addition to all those people you diagnose with cancer, how many
are afraid they have got cancer!).
That is why GP Update is here to help. We trawl through the
journals so you don’t have to. We will bring you up to speed
on the latest controversies, research and guidelines where
these are relevant to GPs. We will set it in the context of what is
known already and help to give you ideas of how to change your
practice and demonstrate this for revalidation.
Everything we present is fully referenced so you know you can
trust where it came from – and if you want to do more reading,
you know where to find the information – but you don’t have to!
We are passionate that our course should help you to change
your practice. We want to maximise the amount of positive
change our delegates can make as a result of coming on our
course. To help with this, we use practical examples, case
studies and small group work (but no icky group presentations!).
We also provide an action plan to help capture learning and
ideas for change before they float out the window in the middle
of Monday morning surgery.
The course is presented by Peter Rose and Rosie Loftus.
Peter has been a GP principal in Oxfordshire for 27 years. He
also spends half his time as a senior lecturer at Oxford University
Department of Primary Care, with research interests in cancer,
genetics and paediatrics.
Rosie is a GP based in Kent and has been Macmillan Cancer
Support’s national lead GP advisor since 2003. She is passionate
about improving care for cancer patients and having been a GP
partner for over 20 years knows the challenges we face. She
has worked in hospice care and was part of the central team for
the Gold Standards Framework when still under the Macmillan
umbrella. She has also made her small screen debut on TV as
the GP in the national cancer awareness campaign!
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for all GPs (and GP ST3s) who want to
improve care for their cancer patients or who have an interest in
updating their skills and knowledge in this area. It is aimed at day
to day GPs, not just those with a special interest. Try it…..you
might like it!
Important note: All of our courses are completely free from pharmaceutical company sponsorship. This
means that you can be totally reassured that there will be no biasing of the information presented to you and
that there will be no reps there on the day!

What will be covered?
Will we tell you everything you will ever need to know? No!
But we will tell you about the latest evidence, what it means
in practice and give you some practical tips on how to change
your practice.
At each stage we will focus on the latest evidence and what it
means to us in our consulting and treatment rooms. We will also
encourage you to share good practice from your own primary
care teams and experience.
We will focus on the cancer journey, even before diagnosis
because prevention is a big part of our job as GPs. We will try to
address those day to day niggly questions that patients ask that
make you wish you’d listened to the radio 4 news on the way
into work! By the end of the day we hope you will have resources
to help you feel confident about:
This is a lot to cover in one day and so delegates each receive
a copy of The GP Cancer Handbook. This handbook covers
the results of the most important research relevant to cancer in
primary care over the last 5 years. The GP Cancer Handbook is
much more than just a set of lecture notes. It covers the subjects
more extensively than is possible in the one-day course and is a
valuable resource for future reference and personal study.
Cancer prevention:
• What lifestyle changes REALLY make a difference?
• What is a ‘teachable moment’ and how can I identify them?
• Is aspirin a miracle drug?
• Why is the UK changing the HPV vaccine?
The course is free to attend…. • How do the current programmes work and what are the controversies?
There is no charge for delegates to attend this course as
Macmillan Cancer Support is covering the cost. However, if you
book on the course and then fail to attend we will ask you to pay
the cost of your place which is £275. We think that this is only fair
as (a) Macmillan Cancer Support is a charity and (b) you would
be depriving another doctor of attending if you booked and
didn’t show up!
Cancer diagnosis:
….but is there a catch?
Cancer screening:
• Why does the UK lag behind and what can we do?
• What actions can we take to raise awareness of cancer symptoms and help our patients to present earlier?
• How can I maximise the effectiveness of safety netting?
• What features should we look out for for those ‘easily missed’ cancers?
• When does family history matter?
Cancer treatment:
• What are the common long term side effects of common treatments and how might these present in survivors?
• Should I advise cancer patients to rest or take exercise?
• How can I make the cancer care review work to meet patients’ unmet needs?
• Recognising and treating oncology emergencies.
Palliative care:
• Prescribing common medication – how should we use opiates and does oxygen really help?
• How can we ensure that palliative care is delivered really well in our practice?
No, except that we would like your feedback on the course and
so you will be asked to complete two short online questionnaires,
one before and one after the course, and a short feedback
survey on the day of the course.
We expect demand to be high so please book quickly.
Places on this course are limited and we are expecting demand
to be very high, places will therefore be allocated on a first come
first served basis on receipt of a signed booking form. You will
receive email confirmation of your booking. Bookings can only
