ACTION PLAN 1
DEVELOPING SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE
Q7a - take responsibility for identifying and meeting your developing professional needs
Q14 Have a secure knowledge and understanding of your subjects/curriculum areas
Strengths in subject knowledge and understanding:
Citizenship: On my INA, I believed myself to be very confident when dealing with the role of business and how the economy
functions as a result of my Economics A level. Although I have no formal qualifications, I am fairly confident dealing with
diversity, the role of government, the importance of fair conflict resolution, the work of the courts and globalisation
History: My strengths are The Holocaust, American History, Europe 1789-1914 and Theoretical History. I have an excellent overall
understanding of the twentieth century. Prior to this, my political and economic history is very good. My American history is
better after 1914, and I am particularly specialized on the period from 1939.
R.E I have an interest in the major world religions and GCSE RE.
Subject Knowledge Development Needs identified in Initial Needs Analysis:
Citizenship Areas that were found wanting are the criminal justice system, rights and responsibilities and ethical dimensions of
citizenship and moral education. I have a long way to go before I have developed a teachable knowledge of legal and
human rights issues. I also need to learn more about the work of community based voluntary group and the role of the medias.
Much development needed:

Law

Human Rights (and responsibilities).
Some development needed:

Diversity

Government and politics

Conflict resolution

Globalisation.

Ethical dimensions and moral education.
History: I have specific in-depth knowledge of a few topics. I have covered other areas, but have forgotten much.
In terms of the NC, this leaves gaps in:
KS3 Britain- all: 1066-1900
KS4 Medicine Through Time. Castles.
RE: I have a lot to do here. I need to learn more about the major world religions and about the moral and ethical issues
covered in RE at KS3 and 4.
MONTHLY DEVELOPMENT TARGET:
Please note the target below
Citizenship: Rights and responsibilities
History:
Improve British History 1066-1500. (KS3)
RE:
Improve knowledge of main aspects of Christianity
Please note below how the target will be achieved
Citizenship:
I will read and make notes on the two chapters recommended by my tutor in
Osler, A. and Starkey, H. (2007) Teachers and Human Rights Education, Stoke-on-Trent; Trentham
I will also make notes on teaching ideas for KS3 from
Oxfam (2004) Developing Rights: teaching rights and responsibilities for ages 11-14. Oxfam.
History: I will revise my knowledge of history 1066-1500 and produce a time line for later reference in KS3 lessons
RE: I will make notes on the key areas of Christianity covered in KS3 RE

ACTION PLAN 2
DEVELOPING SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE
Q7a take responsibility for identifying and meeting your developing professional needs
Q14 Have a secure knowledge and understanding of your subjects/curriculum areas
REVIEW OF EVIDENCE OF ACHIEVEMENT:
Please review whether the target set on the previous Action Plan has been fully achieved and, if necessary, carry
incomplete targets forward to this Action Plan
My targets were to focus on:
Citizenship: Rights and responsibilities
History:
Improve British History 1066-1500.
RE:
Improve knowledge of main aspects of Christianity
Citizenship:
I read and made notes on both books and in addition found a lot of material on line for teaching about rights (Christian Aid
and Amnesty International). The teaching sessions helped and I have now completed a lesson plan for a Yr 8 class on the rights
of the child.
History: I have created a time line from 1066-1500. for KS3 lessons
RE: I feel quite confident now in my knowledge of Christianity in terms of teaching it to KS3. We have not yet had our three RE
sessions. Once we have had these I will be able to see if there are more aspects I need to address.

Please note the target below
Citizenship: The criminal justice system
History:

RE:
Improve knowledge of Islam
Please note below how the target will be achieved
Citizenship:
I have made arrangements to borrow another student’s textbook from his A level law. I will make notes on the key aspects of
the criminal justice system from this. I will also access the scheme of work for teaching about the criminal justice system on the
QCA website (exemplary materials for assessment) and identify any other areas I would need to know to teach this scheme.
History: I will revise my knowledge of history 1500-1900 and continue to develop my time line for later reference in KS3.
RE: I will make notes on the key areas of Islam covered in KS3 RE I am interested in how the teaching of Islam links to the
current debates about rights and Islamophobia. If time I would like to read
Coles, M.I. (2007) Every Muslim Child Matters: practical guidance for schools. Stoke-on-Trent; Trentham
