Lung Cancer Awareness
Campaign
Spring
2016
• Aim: to increase survival for lung cancer patients in Wales
• How: Reduce patient-related delays in the lung cancer
pathway
• Rationale: a more aware public will recognise symptoms
and more promptly present to primary care with potential for
 earlier diagnosis
 at earlier stage
 so eligible for radical treatment
 with improved patient outcomes

To run a Marathon……
You would prepare
for this…..
………so why not prepare
for surgery?
Aim: To improve pre-treatment health status for all patients
undergoing lung cancer treatment whether this be surgery,
chemotherapy of palliation
How?:
1. Holistic optimisation at the point of first contact in Primary Care and continuing
into secondary care setting.
2. Pre-habilitation (Nutrition and Physiotherapy ? Psychology)
3. Develop Enhanced Recovery pathway to ensure seamless care along the entire
patient pathway
Rationale:
1. Increased numbers of patients receiving potentially curative treatment
2. Improved short and long term survival rates
3. Reduced post-treatment recovery times
4. Shorter hospital stays, reduced critical care stay, fewer complications, fewer
readmissions, less dependency on primary and social care post-treatment.
5. Improved patient experience.
6. Improved reputation of the cancer outcomes in Wales
