Telarc Releases Zuill Bailey’s Elgar Cello Concerto
with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra,
Krzysztof Urbański, Conductor - January 15, 2013
Zuill Bailey’s rare combination of celebrated artistry, technical wizardry, and
engaging personality have secured his place as one of the most sought after and
active cellists today.
This latest album—his fifth with Telarc and second with the Indianapolis Symphony
Orchestra—is the follow up to his previous chart-topping album, which featured the
Dvorák Cello Concerto and won Gramophone’s Editor’s Choice Award. Of Zuill’s
Dvorák Cello Concerto, Gramophone declared that, “until now the recording to
recommend was the celebrated DG version featuring the partnership of Rostropovich
and Karajan... but this wonderfully spontaneous new version by Zuill Bailey and Jun
Märkl tends to sweep the board.” Bailey’s latest collaboration of the Elgar Cello
Concerto in E minor with the ISO led by Music Director Krzysztof Urbański is yet
another match made in heaven.
Sir Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor was the last work completed by the
composer before his death, and Zuill’s interpretation captures the subtlety and
drama of the piece. Elgar intended for the cello to contrast with a sheer orchestral
accompaniment, and the ISO is a perfect backdrop for Mr. Bailey’s poignant tone.
From the beginning chords to the engaging melody, his sensitivity breathes through
the cello.
Zuill Bailey’s continued partnership with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has
flourished over the years and continues with this monumental piece. “The
relationship between the soloist and the orchestra is essential, especially for a live
performance that will transcend for generations to come,” said Zuill Bailey. “The ISO
and Krzysztof Urbański work hand in hand for this composition to come alive, and
this collaboration is very gratifying for a soloist."
The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra also presents selections from Má Vlast,
Bedřich Smetana’s patriotic musical ode to his home country, Czechoslovakia.
Smetana was directly influenced by the revolutions of 1848, and poured his
nationalism into his masterful work, Má Vlast. It is a collection of six tone poems,
and featured on this album are Vyšehrad (The High Castle), Vltava (The Moldau) and
Šárka. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Krzysztof Urbański harness the
feverish energy of Smetana’s work and present an incredible recording that no one
should miss.
Zuill Bailey has been a featured soloist with such symphony orchestras as Los
Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco, and has also collaborated with the most
eminent conductors in the world including Alan Gilbert, James DePriest, Andrew
Litton and Itzhak Perlman. He has appeared at Disney Hall, the Kennedy Center, the
United Nations and has had a recurring role on the HBO’s series, “Oz.”
Krzysztof Urbański began the second season of his role as Music Director of the
Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in September 2012. Along with his position with
the ISO, Urbański continues as Chief Conductor and Artistic Leader of the
Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. In April 2013, Urbański will become the Principal
Guest Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He has many upcoming debuts,
including with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Washington’s National Symphony
Orchestra.
Under the leadership of Music Director Krzysztof Urbański and Principal Pops
Conductor Jack Everly, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has become a leading
orchestra in the nation. The ISO’s commitment to artistic excellence, creative
programming, and its innovative digital music library has heralded them as one of
the great orchestras in the United States. The ISO has received national and
international acclaim with its radio broadcasts, tours and recordings.
Telarc’s Elgar Cello Concerto [TEL 34030-02] will be available at retail January 15,
