Metamorphosis refers to the way that certain organisms develop, grow and change form. Metamorphosis means “change.” Incomplete STAGES Complete STAGES Metamorphosis- 3 Metamorphosis- 4 or 5 Egg Larva Pupa Adult Female lays eggs. Larva hatch from the eggs. They do not look like adult insects. They usually have a wormlike shape. Caterpillars, maggots and grubs are all just the larval stages of insects. Larvae molt their skin several times and they grow slightly larger. Larva make cocoons around themselves. Larva don’t eat while they’re inside their cocoons. Their bodies develop into an adult shape with wings, legs, internal organs This change takes anywhere from 4 days to many months. Inside the cocoon larvae change into adults. The adult will break out of the cocoon. Egg Nymph Adult A female insect lays eggs. These eggs are often covered by a case which protects the eggs and holds them together. Eggs hatch into nymphs. Nymphs are similar to the adult but do not have wings. Nymphs eat the same food as the adult grasshopper. Nymphs shed or molt their exoskeletons (outer casing). They are replaced with larger ones as they grow. Insects stop molting when they reach their adult size. They grow wings. Frogs undergo a complete metamorphosis as well. (5 stages) Egg Tadpole: lives in the water, breathes with gills, and has a tail. Tadpole with legs Froglet: As the tadpole grows, lungs and legs form, and the gills and tail are absorbed into the body. Adult Frog: animal leaves the water and lives mainly on land, as a frog.
