Bob Yin MD Biography:
Bob Yin, M.D., is an Orthopedic Surgeon with specialized training and
experience in Sports Medicine. He is an expert in the care of athletes of all ages
and abilities, from little leaguers and weekend warriors to the elite collegiate or
professional athlete.
Dr. Yin’s primary goal is to provide the highest quality, personalized orthopedic
care to each patient, so they can get back to their desired work and activities with
minimal pain and maximum function. He strives to achieve early return to activity
for his patients through individualized care.
Dr. Yin specializes in minimally-invasive arthroscopic surgery of the knee,
shoulder, hip, and elbow. He has extensive experience in the non-surgical and
surgical treatment of knee meniscus and cartilage injuries, ACL tears, shoulder
instability, rotator cuff pathology, and hip injuries including impingement and
labral tears. Dr. Yin is also specially trained in the treatment of elbow injuries
after completing his fellowship at Kerlan Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles,
where the “Tommy John” elbow surgery was invented by Dr. Frank Jobe in 1974.
While Dr. Yin has a particular interest in advanced surgical techniques and
technology, he believes that surgical treatment should only be offered when all
reasonable non-surgical treatments have failed to provide adequate
improvement. He is trained and experienced in the latest non-surgical treatment
strategies for orthopedic injuries, including physical therapy, oral medications,
and injection-based treatments such as “PRP” and “viscosupplementation” joint
lubricants. He is able to perform ultrasound-guided examinations and procedures
in the office, to allow better treatment of injuries while avoiding the additional
radiation associated with X-rays and CAT scans. In his experience, the correct
low-risk non-invasive treatments can be highly effective, and up to 90% of
patients will get better without surgery.
For patients who may need surgery, Dr. Yin’s main surgical interests include
advanced arthroscopic techniques for acute and chronic injuries of the knee,
shoulder, hip, elbow, hand, and wrist. He also has extensive experience in open
surgery of the shoulder, including shoulder replacement, as well as open surgery
for hip and knee replacements.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Yin completed his undergraduate education
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was active in cancer
research and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He received his medical doctorate from
Columbia University in New York City where he graduated with the highest
distinction as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and
received the Gold Foundation Award for Humanism in Medicine. He completed
his orthopedic surgery residency at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital of
Columbia University Medical Center, where he was awarded the Harrison
McLaughlin Award for Excellence in Orthopedic Trauma Surgery. He pursued
additional sub-specialty training at the world-renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic
Clinic for the professional athlete in Los Angeles, where he completed a
fellowship in Sports Medicine. During his fellowship, Dr. Yin served as an
assistant team physician and consultant to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los
Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Sparks,
University of Southern California Trojan football team, and the Fullerton College
football team.
Dr. Yin’s academic achievements in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine include
numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and lectures, as well as
presentations at regional and national professional meetings. Internationally, he
volunteered his orthopedic services with Children of China Pediatrics Foundation,
a non-profit organization providing surgical treatment for birth defects and
disabilities to children in China’s orphanages.
Dr. Yin is a member of numerous professional and research societies, including
the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society
for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
An active runner throughout his career and training, Dr. Yin completed the New
York City Marathon in 2013. He continues his passion for running, golf, hiking,
and fishing in Orange County, California, where he lives with his wife.
