Job Summary
The Constitution of the United States assigns the President two main responsibilities: Chief
Executive of the U.S. government Executive Branch and Commander-in-Chief of the U.S.
Armed Forces. The President has supervisory responsibilities over the Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, the White House Chief of Staff, and the Cabinet, which includes the Vice
president and the heads of 15 executive departments. This power is granted to the President with
the purpose to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.
Constitutional Requirements
 At least 35 years of age
 Natural-born citizen of the United States
 Resident in the United States for at least 14 years
Primary Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities
 Serve as Commander in Chief of the of the U.S. Armed Forces
 Direct acts of war as a part of the National Command Authority
 Authorize use of nuclear weapons by the U.S.
 Oversee the Executive branch of the U.S. government
 Deliver the State of the Union address in joint sessions of the U.S. Congress
 Convene extraordinary sessions of one or both Houses of Congress
 Adjourn both Houses if they Houses cannot agree on a date of adjournment
 Make treaties, with the advice and consent of the Senate
 Appoint Ambassadors, Consuls, Judges of the Supreme Court and all other officers of the
United States
 Grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of
impeachment
 Create executive orders
 Develop and present a federal budget to Congress
 Review, sign, or veto legislation
 Grant recognition of foreign authority
