Negation in English and Arabic

ž Negation in English and Arabic
ž English negation can be realized by :
 Not
 Never ,nobody, no ,nothing , etc.’
 Semi-negatives like scarcely, rarely, hardly, little ,few
 How to make a negative sentence?
ž Three types of negation
ž 1- Clausal Negation: I haven’t seen her.
ž 2- Local Negation: They live not far from here.
ž 3-Affixal Negation: That is untrue.
ž Scope of negation
ž The scope of negation refers to the effect of negative
items on the part of the clause that follows them.
Compare :
ž She didn’t type some of the reports. Vs
ž She didn’t type any of the reports.
ž In the first sentence, she typed some reports, but not all
indicating that some reports were not typed.
ž In the second sentence, she didn’t type any reports some all
are still not typed.
ž Arabic negation
ž Four negative particles:
ž ‫ما‬
ž ‫ال‬
ž ‫ لما‬/ ‫لم‬
ž ‫لن‬
ž ‫ليس‬
ž
Their use is governed by the tense /aspect of the verb
they negate .
ž ‫ما‬
ž
It is used to negate :
ž - a verb in a verbal sentence
ž )‫ (أحب فعل مضارع‬.‫ما أحب هذا‬
ž )‫ ال يلعب‬:‫ (لعبت فعل ماض وهنا في جاز استخدام ال بدال عن ما‬.‫ما لعبت‬
ž ‫ال اعبدُ ما تعبدون * وال انتم عابدون ما اعبد‬
ž - a noun phrase in an equational sentence
ž .‫ما الظل ُم ناف ٌع‬
ž ‫ لما‬/ ‫لم‬
ž
‫ لم‬negates the verb in the imperfect jussive.
ž ‫لم يلد ولم يولد ولم يكن له كفؤا ً احد‬
ž
‫لم يكن الذين كفروا من اهل الكتاب والمشركين منفكين حتى تاتيهم البينة (سورة‬
)1 /‫البينة‬
‫أال واني لم اخرج أشرا ً وال بطرا ً إنما خرجت لغرض اإلصالح في امة جدي رسول هللا‬
ž ‫ لما‬negates the verb and the negation extends to the moment
of speaking ,implying that action may happen in the future
ž ‫وعد أن يحضر ولما يصل‬
ž ‫ال‬
ž
Like ‫ما‬, this negative particle negates:
ž A verb in a verbal sentence (imperfect)
ž ‫ال اشعر بالتعب أالن‬
ž ‫ال سمح هللا‬
‫ينبغي أال تغلق الباب أمام الناس ‪ž‬‬
‫ال تكذب ‪ž‬‬
‫فال صدق وال صلى ‪ž‬‬
‫‪ž A noun phrase in an equational sentence‬‬
‫ال شكر على واجب ‪ž‬‬
‫حاضر ‪ž‬‬
‫طالب‬
‫ال‬
‫ٌ‬
‫ٌ‬
‫ال اله إال هللا ‪ž‬‬
‫لن ‪ž‬‬
‫‪ž This negative particle negates imperfect verbs in the‬‬
‫‪subjunctive mood and expresses an emphatic future‬‬
‫‪negation‬‬
‫فأن لم تفعلوا ولن تفعلوا فتقوا النار التي وقودها الناس والحجارة أُعدت للكافرين‬
‫(سورة المائدة‪)42/‬‬

‫وإذ قلتم يا موسى لن نؤمنَ لك حتى نرى هللا جهرةً فأخذتكم الصاعقة وانتم تنظرون‬
‫(سورة المائدة‪)55/‬‬

‫ليس ‪ž‬‬
‫كان ‪ is one of the auxiliary verb‬فعل ناقص ‪ž This defective verb‬‬
‫‪ . It typically negates an equational sentence.‬وأخواتها‬
‫‪ž It is marked for person, number , and gender if there is no‬‬
‫‪explicit subject‬‬
‫ليس البر إن تولوا قِب َل المشرق و المغرب ولكن البر من امن باهلل واليوم األخر و‬
‫الملئكة والنبيين ‪( ...‬سورة المائدة‪)111/‬‬
