Greenland and the EU background 1973-1985 Greenland member of the EU along with Denmark in1973 Greenland withdrew from the EU in 1985 With specific withdrawal conditions 1. EU Treaty art. 182-188 art. 187 is the legal base for the Partnership between GL and the EU after 2007. Political Declaration of June 27th 2006; cooperation relates to; Education Mineral resources, tourism and culture Climate change & sustainable development in the Arctic Reseach and alternative energy issues New searoutes and the EEZ of Greenland Budgettary support on approx. 25 million EUR annually will be transfered to GHRG in the years 2007-2013 Council decision of July 17th 2006 implements the polical declaration. OCT decision from 2001 Cooperation on issues; education, development of resources which contributes to sustainable development, scientific cooperation within alternative energy and climate change. Development of new transport routes are also mentioned. An annual budgettary support to GL on 25 millioner EUR, from 2007-2013. Greenland Programming Document focuses on the education sector, for the entire period 2007-13. From 31/12-2007 and annually a status report on the use of the budget support to the EU Prior to the end of 2010 a MTR will be prepared. Icecap issues in combination with climate change politics The fragile Arctic ecosystems and pristine nature are core issues when the global community looks towards Greenland Our cultural heritage is an eye opener in todays melting pot of societies Future depends on Greenland ice cap, why not make this a core for future relations with the Union? Economic development in Greenland requires international cooperation primarily in education, research & investments, these issues should attract you to Greenland in the future! - all should lead to continued capacity building in the Arctic Greenland.
