Types of Precipitation
Give FOUR examples of precipitation (not in text, but you should be able to find it in your head!)

Ok, good, now what causes precipitation?
There are, generally, 3 types of precipitation
Convectional Precipitation forms when:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Sun heats ground
Ground is now warm, it heats air above it
Warm air rises (cools 1°C per 100m)
Clouds develop, when air cools and
condenses
5. Heavy rain and thunderstorms occur
Relief Precipitation forms when:
1. Warm air is forced to rise over a mountain
(cools 1°C per 100m)
2. Clouds develop, when air cools and
condenses
3. Rains
4. Air goes down the mountain, and warms
again

Frontal (Cyclonic) Precipitation forms when:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Cold air mass and warm air mass meet
Cold air is heavier, it stays low
Warm air is lighter, it rises
Clouds develop, when air cools and condenses
Rains
