CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES
NRCan Inactive Mines Projects
Projects performed 1992-1997
• separate partnership agreements with Ontario (MNDM)
and Nova Scotia (Department of Natural Resources),
developed NRCan Inactive Mines Database
2
•
In Ontario, modeled 100 highest priority sites identified
by Province
•
In Nova Scotia, modeled 64 mines (mostly coal)
CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES
NODA Inactive Mines Project
3
•
project funded by NRCan, Ontario MNDM and
industry
•
nearly 100 mines modeled in detail
•
high level of cooperation between MNDM and
CANMET
CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES
NODA Inactive Mines Project
Purpose was to:
• develop computer techniques and software to
establish and manage a comprehensive inactive
mines database
•
enter into the database, site information based
on priorities of Provincial and industry partners
Incorporated site information from Ontario’s
AMHAZ database

NRCan Inactive Mines Database
Current status:
• basic database is maintained
11
•
Ontario data routinely provided to Ontario
Government officials (Resident Geologists)
•
Ontario data provided (on authorization of
MNDM) to private interests (ie. copies of Kam
Kotia file to 23 firms responding to RFP for
remediation of site)
CANMET MINING AND MINERAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES
NRCan Inactive Mines Database
Current status:
• Project Leader position established, supporting
expertise as needed (drafting, modeling)
•
12
Special studies performed as needed (current A Canadian Standard for Shallow Stope
Decommissioning)

Future capabilities:
• facilitate communications between
jurisdictions, work towards common standards,
information center re “best practices”
13
•
special studies at problem sites - ground
control issues, environmental issues
•
maintain a distributed database
