Letter-Writing Campaign
After reviewing our background materials on climate change and the Paris Climate Change
conference, help your students send their messages to the delegates by writing a letter.
We think it’s important for our children’s voices to be heard. Clean would like to send your
class letters to the delegates in Paris. You can email them to us via
[email protected], or snail mail them to Kelly Borkowski c/o Clean Foundation, 126
Portland Street, Dartmouth, NS B2Y1H8. The deadline to receive these letters is Nov. 25th
This letter-writing campaign (grades 4-6) takes a congratulatory note, as if the climate
conference in Paris is over and sensible guidelines have been secured. The students provide a
‘thank you in advance’ celebrating the results that will protect future generations. Sample
letters that can be modified and personalized for each student are provided. Artwork or a short
personal account of one of the things they appreciate the most about planet Earth can be
included.
This project could be one letter per class (signed by all, in greeting card format) or one letter
per student, depending on the amount of time you have to complete the project.
We encourage you and your students to write your own letters, as this is very effective and
encourages creativity. We have several samples below in case this is helpful.
One creative idea would be to write the letter from the perspective of an animal. An example:
Dear leaders of the world:
I am a polar bear, and I am sad. The ice is melting and my friends and I have nowhere to live.
LETTER SAMPLE #1:
Dear UNFCCC* Parties,
I want to sincerely thank you in advance for your truly amazing work in Paris this fall. I know
that you will put policies in place that will protect the future of our planet and all the living
creatures that inhabit it, including me! After all, you are some of the greatest minds, so how
could you fail? You will protect the living and pave the way for future generations as if they
were your own. I know you will.
Below is a picture/written statement of what I love the most about the Earth (it is very difficult to
choose just one thing, isn’t it?)
Sincerely,
*UNFCCC- United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
LETTER SAMPLE #2:
Dear UNFCCC Parties,
Thank you sincerely for considering my future. I am so excited to hear about all your great
work in Paris this fall. I look forward to celebrating your achievements with my classmates and
family.
Sincerely,
LETTER SAMPLE #3:
Dear UNFCCC Parties,
Congratulations in advance on all your good work in Paris this fall. I feel honoured that you are
working to protect my coastal city/town from rising sea levels. Your work is appreciated more
than you know.
Sincerely,
