The suns energy allows plant life
to grow so that animals can
survive.

Plants
Plants
Plants need the sun to make
their own food through a
process called photosynthesis.
Plants are a source of food for all
sorts of vertebrates and
invertebrates.
Invertebrates can be found on
any part of a plant, this includes
the leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds,
stems and even the roots.

Caterpillars
Caterpillars
There are many different types
of caterpillars.
They can often be seen on the
underside of leaves.
Butterflies, moths, beetles and
some other insect have
caterpillars as larvae
The Death-heads hawk moth is
the biggest moth found on the
island so far.

Wasps
Wasps
There are many different species
of wasps that have different
hunting techniques and food
sources.
Sand wasps hunt for caterpillars,
once it has found a caterpillar it
takes it back to its burrow and
lays its egg on the caterpillar.
When it emerges, the wasp
larvae feeds on the caterpillar
and will then pupate into an
adult wasp.

Cockroaches
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are often
considered as pests, although
some are, many are of them are
not.
The non-native Australasian
cockroach is one which we find
nibbling into food items such as
cereals, and leaving its waste
behind in unwanted places like
our cupboards.

Wasps
The Jewel wasp or cockroach
killer
This wasp hunts cockroaches.
The cockroach is the host for the
wasps larvae.
The wasp stings the cockroach
leaving it paralyzed. The wasp
takes it back to its burrow and
lays its egg in the cockroaches
body.

On hatching, the wasp larvae
feeds on the cockroach
completing its lifecycle by
emerging as an adult

True bugs
Aphids
Aphids are a species of true bug,
which have piecing mouthpart.
Aphids suck the sap from plant
for there food.
There are many other different
types of true bug, some of them
feed on plants and others hunt
for invertebrates using their
piercing mouthparts to suck up
their food.

Ladybirds
Ladybirds
There are many different species
of ladybirds, some of which are
used to control pests such as
aphids and is known as biocontrol.
The adults and larvae both feed
on aphids and are used as biocontrols.

Lacewings
Lacewing adults and larvae feed
on aphids and are used as biocontrols to reduce the number
of aphids.

Insects
Insects
Insects have six legs and many of
them can fly with either one or
two pairs of wings. This includes
beetles, flies, crickets,
grasshoppers, ants, bees and
wasps.
Many insects visit flowering
plants to feed of the pollen and
nectar. These insects are known
as pollinators. The honeybee
produces honey from the nectar
it collects from the flowers.

Praying mantis
The Praying mantis is a large
predatory insect. This means it
can feed on almost any kind of
invertebrate that is big enough
to get trapped between it
forearms as it ambushes its pray.

Birds
Birds
There are a few different types
of wild birds on the island, such
as sparrows, Myna birds and
pigeons.
The Myna bird is often seen
scavenging for food.
They can often be seen in
gardens walking and preying on
invertebrates hidden in among
vegetation.

Lice
Lice
Lice are parasites, they suck the
blood of warm blooded animals
to survive .
Lice are very small insects which
hide in between the hair and fur
of animals, and in between the
feathers of birds
Lice found in the hair of humans,
are known as head lice.

Rats and mice
Rats and mice
Rats and mice are well known
pests and sometimes spread
diseases.
They are omnivores which
means they eat both plants and
animals.
This also includes eating
different types of invertebrates.

This spider, also known as the
Red spider has very large fangs,
which they use to catch their
prey.

creatures which help to
breakdown dead and decaying
plants and animals in the soil by
consuming them.
