Track 3 Projects and cases: implementation and sustainability Title of paper Name of presenter(s) Educational video production in the developing world Bjoern Hassler This paper presents a requirements analysis for educational video production and distribution in the developing world. The analysis makes the case for developing specialised approaches (tools and techniques), allowing the effective use of educational video in less resourced environments, including environments where the ICT infrastructure has got limited capabilities. For video to be used effectively at such institutions, special requirements have to be met. The requirements analysis is based on the outcomes of a recent workshop, held at the Science Dissemination Unit at the UNESCO International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Trieste, Italy). The workshop was aimed at academic and academic-related staff at universities in developing countries across the world. It covered both necessary theory (web standards, web 2.0, streaming technology, infrastuctural considerations), as well as hands-on sessions in content production (text, video, audio, animation). The paper also showcases media produced at the workshop, and analyses capabilities of low cost hardware and open source tools (for production and delivery). It also presents methodologies that were specially adapted for low-bandwidth environments. We make a strong case for working collaboratively in North-South partnerships, to share best practice for educational content production.
