Chapter 15: The Universe Test Study Sheet California Science Standard 8.4: The structure and composition of the universe can be learned from studying stars and galaxies and their evolution. As a basis for understanding this concept: a. Students know galaxies are clusters of billions of stars and may have different shapes. Know how scientists can detect the presence of a planet around a distant star. Know that there are three basic galaxy shapes. Know that there are billions of galaxies with billions of stars. Know that most stars appear in star systems as binary or multiple star systems or clusters. What is the “big bang” and what are the two primary evidences for the theory? Know the theory of how stars and our solar system were formed. b. Students know that the Sun is one of many stars in the Milky Way galaxy and that stars may differ in size, temperature, and color. Know that the Milky Way is one of many galaxies and that it is the one that the Sun and the Earth are in. Know that scientists classify stars according to size, color, temperature, brightness and chemical composition. Know what the electromagnetic spectrum is and how astronomers use it in determining the chemical composition of a star. Know the life stages of stars and what a star’s lifetime depends on. What is an H-R diagram and what is it used for? c. Students know how to use astronomical units and light years as measures of distances between the Sun, stars, and Earth. Know how astronomers use parallax to determine a star’s distance from Earth. Know that a light-year is a measurement of distance: how far a particle of light can travel in one year’s time. Know that one astronomical unit equals the average distance of the Earth’s distance from the Sun. The test will be 25 questions, multiple choice
