AS Geography induction task
The AS course consists of a human and a physical component. The human component focuses on globalisation and
how places change, while the physical component covers tectonic processes and coastal landscapes.
Your induction task is in two parts, giving you an introduction to, and a chance to think about, both elements.
1. Globalisation –
Key idea - globalisation and global interdependence continue to accelerate, resulting in changing opportunities for
businesses and people. This is a new topic to you but of massive significance in the modern world.
Please follow the hyperlink to a very useful overview of the issues associated with globalisation:
http://www.coolgeography.co.uk/Alevel/AQA/Year%2013/Development%20&%20Globalisation/Globalisation/Globalisation.htm
Your task is to create a summary that covers these points




What is globalisation?
How has globalisation developed over time?
What are the impacts of globalisation? Classify them into positive and negative and economic, social,
environmental and political.
What’s your own view on globalisation – is it a force for good or bad?
You can choose the format that suits you – a written report, a concept map, extended spider diagram, poster, video
and you can use other sources too.
2. Coastal landscapes
Key idea 2B.9 – coastal flooding is a significant and increasing risk for some coastlines
2B.9C – climate change may increase coastal flood risk (frequency and magnitude of storms, sea level rise) but the
pace and magnitude of this threat is uncertain.
Your task is to answer these questions using the websites below for information




How are climates changing?
What is the evidence of climate change?
Why does climate change lead to increase frequency and size (magnitude) of storms?
Why does climate change lead to sea level rise?
Which coastal areas are under the most threat?
What is the threat to natural environments from increased storms/sea level rise?
What is the threat to humans from increased storms/sea level rise?
What can be done to reduce the impact of global climate change on coastal environments?
The Maldives is an area that faces an uncertain future. Why is the Maldives a country under threat?
