Decimal)

Standards and Technology)
Definition / Description
A standard for defining codes for information
exchange between equipment produced by different
Manufacturers. A code that follows the American
Standard Code for Information Interchange.
Ref: NENA-STA-027 (originally 04-001)
Ref: NENA 02-010
A coding system in which each decimal digit from 0 to 9 is represented by four binary
(0 or 1) digits.
This group, in 1959, proposed a series of time code formats now known as IRIG or
NASA time codes.
The U.S. Government agency that oversees the operation of the U.S. National Bureau
of Standards. NIST works with industry and government to advance measurement
science and to develop standards in support of industry, commerce, scientific
institutions, and all branches of government.
NTP (Network Time
Protocol)
A powerful utility for synchronizing system clocks over a TCP/IP network
SBS (Straight Binary
Seconds)
A binary number that appears in the IRIG time code
which represents the total number of seconds since
Midnight.
A networking protocol for clock synchronization between
computer systems over packet-switched, variable-latency data
networks.
SNTP (Simple Network Time A utility for synchronizing system clocks over a
TCP/IP network. This protocol is similar to NTP and
Protocol)
is used when the ultimate performance of the full NTP
Implementation is not needed.
TTL (Transistor to Transistor An internal transfer standard for electronics devices in which a 1 state is +5 volts and a
zero state is 0 volts. [There is a Comment in v19 that reads: “change the definition of
Logic)
TTL from “Transistor to Transistor Logic” to “Transistor-Transistor Logic”.
Alternatively, just remove the definition, as it is not particularly unique to emergency
telecommunications.”]
UPS (Uninterruptible Power A backup system designed to provide continuous power in the event of a commercial
power failure or fluctuation. A device that provides battery backup when the electrical
Supply)
power fails or drops to an unacceptable voltage level. Small UPS systems provide
power for a few minutes; enough to power down the computer in an orderly manner,
while larger systems have enough battery for several hours.

UTC (Coordinated Universal Also known as Zulu or GMT. Time provided by National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST) and United States Naval Observatory (USNC).
Time)
The primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. It is, within
about 1 second, mean solar time at 0° longitude; it does not observe daylight saving
time.
The primary time standard in the world based on the time zone in Greenwich.
