already at the end of the base word)

Day 2: Who’s on Base?

Run the Bases
A Game of Base Words
To Prepare:
• Print game board pieces onto paper. Glue into a file folder or 11x14
piece of construction paper side-by-side.
• Print off game cards onto cardstock and laminate for durability.
• Use a large paper clip and pencil for the spinner.
• Place cards face down in the pile.
To Play: (for 2-4 players)
• When it is a player’s turn, he spins a paper clip on the spinner.
• If a player lands on One Base, Two Bases, Three Bases or Run
Home!, the player picks a card from the stack. The player locates
and spells the base word from the card then reads the entire word.
In some cases, a silent e will need to be added back to the base word
(like in write). If the player is able to locate/spell the base word and
read the entire word, he or she can move as indicated in his spin.
Players take turns in this fashion. (If a player is on third base and
spins “two bases”, players can decide if he just runs home or if he
can score a run, then also go to first base in the same turn.)
• If a player lands on Strike Out!, that player loses his turn.
• Players can keep score on a scrap piece of paper or dry erase
board.
• The game is over after a certain amount of time (decided before
play). Players can also decide ahead of time that the first person to
score 10 runs (or 20 runs, etc.) is the winner.
