Background and History
• First case was found in animals in 1904
• First found in humans in 1908
• Found by Archibald Garrod
SYMPTONS AND INFO
• Albinism is a rare skin disease
• Someone has no pigment in their eyes, skin, and
hair
• 1 in every 17,000 Americans develop albinism
• Can effect all races, many might not know they
have it
• Life expectancy is the same as someone who
doesn’t have it
VISION PROBLEMS
• Depends on which type of albinism you have
• Most people with albinism are legally blind
• Form from abnormal development of the eye
• People can have albinism and not have pale skin
• Albinos sometimes have red eyes
Genetics of albinism
• Albinism is a trait that resulted from a gene
mutation
• Albinism is a recessive trait that has genes that
don’t make melanin
• It is passed from parent to offspring by parents
that both have a trait for albinism
• About 1 in every 70 people have a trait for
albinism but only about 1 in 20,000 people are
albino
• Chart shows how an
albino trait is passed on
Other facts
• There are 2 types of albinism: Ocular Albinismonly loss of pigment in eyes, bad sight
• . Oculocutaneous Albinism- makes skin pale and
has 4 levels
• There are several dozen different genetic sub
types of albinism which affect melanin
production.
