Dice Steps Game Overview Description This is a dice and paper game which creates opportunities for lots of regular step/repeated addition calculations. Game Setup Fill in a “step” and “starting number” on the table, as below, before the game commences. Blank tables to print are on sheet Dice Steps Recording Chart. Set a target approximately 10 times the step beyond the starting number (or higher if you want more adding per game). So, if going up in steps of 3, from start number of 0, set a target of 30 (and if going from a start number of 10, then 40). Playing the Game Throw the dice to indicate the number of steps that needs to be taken for that turn, e.g. I throw a 4 so I fill in 7, 10, 13, 17 (4 steps of 3) Fill the resulting numbers on the dice step sheet, stepping up from the starting number. (Be careful in first play that pupils don’t think they should use the dice value as the step – that is set at the start.) Game End Once the number sequence passes the target, the game is over. Further Challenge Pupils could play against a timer. Pupils could play repeatedly seeing how few dice rolls they can finish in. Equal ability pupils could race each other. Example Start Number: 4 Step: 3 Target: 30 Dice Throw Step 1 (1 thrown: fill to here) Step 2 (2 thrown: fill to here) Step 3 (3 thrown: fill to here) Step 4 (4 thrown: fill to here) 4 7 10 13 17 2 20 23 2 26 29 6 32 35 38 42 Game ends on 32, on the 4th dice throw. Step 5 (5 thrown: fill to here) Step 6 (6 thrown: fill to here) 45 48
