Research Focus
Biodiversity of deep-sea ecosystems
1) Analyses of biogeographic patterns and taxonomy in the CCFZ. The focus of tis study is to assess
potential impacts that might arise if mining was to take place. This is as part of the EU Funded
Managing Impacts of Deep-sea Resource Exploitation (MIDAS) project.
2) Abyssal biodiversity. There are two main strands to this research: 1) Spatial patterns – looking at
how diversity changes across deep-sea regions with differing degrees of POC flux. b) Temporal
change in abyssal systems.
3) Ecology of SW Indian Ocean Seamounts. This was NERC funded lead by Prof Alex Rogers (Uni of
Oxford) in collaboration with NHM and SAMS. The objective is to determine patterns of biodiversity and
the underlying ecological drivers in nematodes, across the seamounts of the SW Indian Ocean Ridge
using both molecular and morphological analyses.
4) Plastic litter in the deep-sea environment. Assessing the extent and potential consequences of
plastic litter in sediment environments. Currently looking at microbial communities found on litter and
how they compare to those in the ambient environment.
Taxonomy of offshore benthos from regions being explored for oil and gas
A series of projects aims to produce taxonomic guides to support offshore environmental surveys taken
as part of the exploration for oil and gas reserves in a number of areas around the world.
