Living Things Can Come From NonLiving Things
Are you Redi?
• Mid 1600’s, Franceso Redi hypothesized
that flies do not come from rotting meat--• But have their own life cycle and come
from other flies
• He did an experiment
• He disproved that flies do not come from
rotting meat
Redi’s Set-Up
Spallanzani’s Broth Experiment
• Scientific community says, “Microorganism must spontaneously arise from a
vital force.”
• 1700’s, Lazzaro says, “No Way!”
• Did the broth experiment
• His results were conclusive, but fellow
scientists did not except his findings
Pasteur’s Experiment
Biogenesis Theory
• Life comes from other life
• Oh, Oh!
• So where did the first life come
from?
• Forever, will we debate this!
• Evolution vs. Adaptation
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
• Dutch microscope
maker
• 1675 first observed
living cells under a
microscope
• Wasn’t sure what he
was looking at
Robert Hooke
• First to officially
observe plant cells
under the microscope,
1665
• Observed Cork Cells
• They looked like
monk’s quarters
• He called them cells
Matthias Schleiden
• German Botanist
• 1838, concluded that
all plants were
composed of cells
Theodore Schwann
• German Zoologist
• 1839, all animals are
made of cells
Dr. Rudolf Virchow
• Physician instrumental in the
study of pathology
• Studying how disease affects
living things
• Studied cells
• Said all cells come from other
cells
Cell Theory
All living things are made of cells
Cells are the basic unit of structure and
function
All cells come from other cells
