Internship FAQ Sheet for Marketing Students:
Am I eligible to participate in the Internship Program?
Any declared Marketing major who has completed Marketing Concepts (MKTG
3110) with a “C” or better, has completed at least two Marketing electives, and is in good
standing (minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher) is eligible to participate in the Internship
Program. Electives include Marketing Research and Analysis (MKTG 3210),
Advertising Management (MKTG 3211), Retailing Management (MKTG 3212), Personal
Selling and Sales Management (MKTG 3213), Internet Marketing (MKTG 3214), Global
Marketing (MKTG 3215), Consumer Behavior (MKTG 3216), and Sports Marketing
(MKTG 3220).
What do I have to do to receive credit for an internship?
Students must submit an Internship Proposal before they begin their internship.
Students who begin their internship before their proposal is approved will not receive
credit for the internship. Students must complete 150 hours of supervised internship
activities. It is important for students to keep a record of their hours and start date to
avoid confusion or problems with receiving credit. Students may use the Internship Hour
Verification form for this purpose, if they so desire. At the end of the internship, students
must submit a Student Evaluation of the Internship Experience form to the Marketing
Department to receive credit.
Am I able to receive credit for an internship with the company I currently work for
or one that I have worked for in the past?
NO. Belk College policy requires a student who wants to do an internship for
credit to start with an organization or company that is a completely new experience. A
student cannot intern with a company at which they have a prior history (employment or
volunteer). Also, a student cannot have a prior history in a position similar to their
proposed internship position.
Internship FAQ Sheet for Marketing Students:
Will the Marketing Department find an internship for me?
NO. The student is responsible for finding an internship position. This includes
calling companies and setting up interviews. The Marketing Department posts available
internships on a bulletin board outside the Marketing Department office. Additional
internships are available through the Career Center on campus. Students may complete
an internship with a company not posted or listed, as long as the company offers a variety
of marketing activities for the student, the student’s proposal details work activities
sufficiently challenging to justify credit, the supervisor has the expertise to guide the
student, and the supervisor is not related to the student (mother, father, sister, brother,
aunt, uncle, grandparent, etc.).
How do I avoid having to revise and re-submit my proposal?
Complete the first page of the Internship application completely. Use your
UNC Charlotte email address (the official means of communication between the
University and students). Provide the supervisor’s email address and fax number (or
write in “none”). Any inaccuracies in the proposal will be considered a violation of the
Academic Integrity Code and the student will be subject to suspension. Follow the
format guidelines on the proposal. Make sure every question is answered thoroughly and
provide examples. Be specific. Read your proposal aloud to help you spot errors missed
in reading. Visit the Writing Center if you need additional assistance. Typos and
grammatical errors are not permitted. Your proposal will be retained in the Marketing
Department for five years (Belk College policy).
After my application is approved, will the Marketing Department register me?
NO. The Marketing Department provides an authorization for the student to register for
the course. It is the student’s responsibility to register for the course (MKTG 3400). The
Marketing Department does not register students for courses.
Internship FAQ Sheet for Marketing Students:
How are grades determined for the Internship Program?
At the end of the semester, both the student and the employer/supervisor complete
evaluation forms. Students will receive a grade of Pass/No Credit based on these
evaluations. The internship does not affect – increase or decrease – a student’s GPA.
What if I’m having problems/issues with my internship?
Notify the Marketing Department immediately if any of the following occur: your
supervisor is promoted/transferred/fired; you spend all your time performing clerical
activities for which a Marketing degree is not required; you are asked to do anything you
consider to be unethical; or you are being pressured to work more hours per week than
what was stated in your proposal. We can help.
