Helpful hints: Line numbers in Word files

Adding Line Numbers to Code Lines After Inserting a Section Break Just Before the First Line of Code
PCs (Microsoft Word 2007 and 2013):
1. On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Line Numbers
2. Do one of the following:
To number consecutively throughout the document, click Continuous
To start with number 1 on each page, click Restart Each Page
To start with number 1 after each section break, click Restart Each Section
MACs (Microsoft Word 2011):
1. Select the text that you want to number
2. On the Layout tab, under Text Layout, click Line Numbers, and then click More Line Numbering
3. On the Document pop-up menu that appears, next to Apply to, click Selected text
4. Then, click Line Numbers… , and on the Line Numbers pop up that appears, click the Add line numbering check box
5. Click OK in the Line Numbers pop up and then again in the Document pop up
MACs (Microsoft Word 2008):
1. On the View menu, click Print Layout
2. Select the text that you want to number
3. On the Format menu, click Document, and then click the Layout tab
4. On the Apply to pop-up menu, click Selected text
5. Click Line Numbers
6. Select the Add line numbering check box, and then select the options that you want
See page 2 if your code must be in a font smaller than 10 pts to fit in 8 pages but the line numbers are too large or if
your code is in two columns and the line numbers are not showing fully in the narrow gap between the two columns.
Formatting Line Numbers and Additional Tips
If line numbers do not appear for a right-hand column, increase the spacing between your columns.
PCs (Microsoft Word 2007 and 2013):
To ensure all line numbers are visible:
1. On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Columns, then click More Columns, which launches the
Columns menu
2. Adjust Spacing, and click OK, so that all the line numbers are visible (typically 0.6" or more) between columns
3. Check the last page of the document to ensure that 3- or 4-digit numbers are visible
To format line numbers:
1. On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click the little icon at the bottom right of the Styles group, which launches the
Styles menu
2. Find the style named Line Number and select it
3. Click Modify to launch a pop-up window
4. Select font (Arial), 10 pt (or less), and font color (black).
5. Click OK to exit this pop-up window
6. Click Apply in the existing Styles pop-up window
MACs (Microsoft Word 2011):
To ensure all line numbers are visible:

A pop-up window will appear and select Columns... , which launches the Columns menu
