Ocular dominance columns in the human brain from a person who had one eye removed 23 years prior to death. A. A section cut approximately parallel to
the surface of the cortex stained for the presence of the mitochondrial enzyme cytochrome oxidase. The alternating dark and light bands correspond to the
locations of the ocular dominance columns for the intact and removed eyes. Enucleation resulted in very low levels of the enzyme in columns for that eye.
