1. DETAILS ON THE NEXT PLENARY
The next plenary is Thursday 25 November starting at 2pm sharp in the Central Hotel
Dublin. This plenary is aimed at members who run venues and specifically Marketing
Managers, although Artistic Directors, General Managers and Box Office Managers are very
welcome to attend. The programme includes:
• A briefing on the new Audience Development Agency in Northern Ireland and potential
lessons for venues here;
• The Donmar Warehouse, a marketing case study, by its Marketing Director;
• A discussion on venues changing start times, led by the Abbey;
• The value of venues investing in websites using positive case studies.
A timetable and full details are attached to this email. Places are limited so you must RSVP
if you wish to attend. Attendance is on a first come first served basis.
A summary of the public interview with Nicolas Kent of the Tricycle Theatre entitled
'Showtrails - the Theatre of Tribunals' is available on our website. Click here to read it.
2. VAT FACTSHEET AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE
We’ve had a substantial number of enquires from members on the whole area of VAT
regulations. We commissioned an expert to prepare a general fact sheet which answers the
most frequently asked questions as they apply to venues and production companies. For
more information click here.
3. THE BUDGET, THE ARTS COUNCIL AND YOU!
If you are one of the hundreds of organisations who made a submission to the Arts Council
for annual revenue funding, Theatre Forum advises you to download the Arts Council’s
budget submission to government from their website.
Overall, it confirms our pessimistic assessment about the funding situation facing venues in
the immediate and medium term. The figures are also stark evidence of what progress the
whole arts sector is making in increasing funding in real terms – very little. Section 4 is
interesting in that it indicates - if there is extra money for the Arts Council over and above
last year - who in the arts is going to get it!
