UW MEDICINE | OVERVIEW UW MEDICINE EYE INSTITUTE The UW Medicine Eye Institute is one of the nation’s premier eye and vision science centers for clinical care, research and teaching. The Eye Institute is dedicated to the mission of eliminating suffering from eye disease. Nationally Recognized Physicians The Eye Institute’s physicians and surgeons are known for providing expert care and finding new ways to treat eye diseases and vision disorders. Many have been recognized by their peers locally and nationally as “Best Doctors in America” and “Top Doctors in Seattle.” Comprehensive Care for All Your Eye Care Needs The Eye Institute offers complete services from basic eye exams for glasses and contact lenses to evaluations, medical treatments and surgeries for complex eye conditions. Areas of specialization include: •Glaucoma •Cataracts •Retina diseases •Macular degeneration •Diabetic eye disease •Cornea and external diseases •Orbital and eyelid diseases •Ocular inflammatory diseases •Ocular cancer •Neuro-ophthalmology (over) Many of the Eye Institute’s faculty and staff have been recognized as “Best Doctors in America” and “Top Doctors in Seattle.” The Eye Institute also specializes in refractive surgery (such as PRK, LASIK, and LASEK) to correct vision problems and oculofacial plastic surgery to counter the effects of aging on the eyes and face. Research to Discover Tomorrow’s Treatments UW Medicine is one of the nation’s leading research centers for medical discovery. UW researchers hold more than 40 National Institutes of Health grants related to vision. They are conducting groundbreaking research and developing tomorrow’s treatments in such areas as retinal and inflammatory diseases, artificial corneas, gene therapy, nearsightedness, stem cell therapies and macular degeneration. Patient Care with Comfort and Convenience The Eye Institute is located in the Ninth & Jefferson Building at Harborview Medical Center. This modern facility provides a convenient and comfortable setting for patients and families. Parking is available in the underground garage. Designed to support patient-centered care, the clinic has 30 exam lanes, a surgical suite, three well-equipped procedure rooms, an in-suite operating room, state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and an in-office laser suite. Patients also enjoy dramatic views of Seattle and the surrounding water and mountains from every direction. Optical Shop UW Medicine’s optical shop, Eyes on James, is located on the street level of the Ninth & Jefferson Building. Eyes on James provides a wide range of optical services, including complete eye exams, contact lens fittings and a broad selection of designer frames and lenses.
