UW MEDICINE | OVERVIEW
UW MEDICINE EYE INSTITUTE
The UW Medicine Eye Institute is one of the nation’s premier eye and vision
science centers for clinical care, research and teaching. The Eye Institute is
dedicated to the mission of eliminating suffering from eye disease.
Nationally Recognized Physicians
The Eye Institute’s physicians and surgeons are known for providing expert
care and finding new ways to treat eye diseases and vision disorders. Many have
been recognized by their peers locally and nationally as “Best Doctors
in America” and “Top Doctors in Seattle.”
Our physicians and surgeons see more than 30,000 patients and perform
approximately 1,500 surgical procedures annually. With an emphasis on
patient-centered care, the Eye Institute consistently achieves the highest
rankings on patient satisfaction surveys.
Comprehensive Care for All Your Eye Care Needs
The Eye Institute offers complete services from basic eye exams for glasses and
contact lenses to evaluations, medical treatments and surgeries for complex
eye conditions. Areas of specialization include:
• Glaucoma
• Cataracts
• Retina
diseases
• Cornea and external diseases
• Orbital and eyelid diseases
• Ocular inflammatory diseases
Many of the Eye Institute’s faculty and staff have been recognized
as “Best Doctors in America” and “Top Doctors in Seattle.”
The Eye Institute also specializes in refractive surgery (such as PRK and LASEK)
to correct vision problems and oculofacial plastic surgery to counter the effects of
aging on the eyes and face. Other areas of emphasis include comprehensive eye
health, neuro-ophthalmology, oncology and ocular tumors.
Research to Discover Tomorrow’s Treatments
UW Medicine is one of the nation’s leading research centers for medical discovery.
UW researchers hold more than 40 National Institutes of Health grants related to
vision. They are conducting groundbreaking research and developing tomorrow’s
treatments in such areas as retinal and inflammatory diseases, artificial corneas,
gene therapy, nearsightedness, stem cell therapies and macular degeneration.
Patient Care with Comfort and Convenience
The Eye Institute is located in the Ninth & Jefferson Building at Harborview Medical
Center. This modern facility provides a convenient and comfortable setting for patients
and families. Parking is available in the underground garage.
Designed to support patient-centered care, the clinic has 27 exam lanes, three
well-equipped procedure rooms, state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and an in-office
laser suite. Patients also enjoy dramatic views of Seattle and the surrounding water
and mountains from every direction.
Optical shop
UW Medicine’s optical shop, Eyes on James, is located on the street level of the Ninth
& Jefferson Building. Eyes on James provides a wide range of optical services, including
complete eye exams, contact lens fittings and a broad selection of designer frames and
