“Let’sPutonaShow!”–TheDevelopmentofSlur
BeforeSlurbecameaplayattheAllianceTheatre,itwasaclassproductionatthe
PaideiaSchool.Theideawasforthestudentstodeveloptheplaywiththeirteacher
GregChangnonthrougha"collaborativeprocess."Thestudentsstartedoffwriting
theirownmonologuesandgivingtheircharactersabackstory.Manyofthe
backstoriesarefeaturedintheAllianceplay.Thestudentswereinitiallytoldthatthe
lead,D,justhadtobeapersonofcolor.Gregcalledthecharacterslettersbecausehe
didn'tknowwhowouldbecastinwhichpart.Eitheragirloraboycouldbecastas
D,soGregdidn'tchoosethenamesuntiltheroleswerecast.Assuch,thecharacters
tookonthegenderandpersonalityoftheactorplayingtherole.Afterauditions,the
girlthatwascastasD(whothenbecameDaisy)wasMuslim,andthatishowthe
play'scentralideabegan.
PartofGreg'sresponsibilityduringthisprocesswastoadaptthescripttofitthe
AllianceTheatre'sneeds.Greghadtocondensecharacters(thePaideiaperformance
hadacastof29people,whiletheAlliancecastonlyhas5people)becauseofthe
reducednumberofactors/actresses.Healsohadtoshortenlinesbecausethe
Allianceproductionhadtobe30-45minutesshorterthanthePaideiaproduction.

insideamiddleschoolduringtheSnow-pocalypse.Gregisalsoapublishedfiction
writer—his"HowtheNurseFeels,"ashortstoryrecountingahighschoolversionof
RomeoandJuliet,wasadaptedintoamusicalbytheCaliforniaConservatoryofthe
ArtsanddevelopedthroughtheASCAPFoundation/DisneyMusicalTheatre
Workshop.SomecommonthemesinGreg’sworkaremanagingdifficultemotions,
suchasfear,angerandsadness,anddiscoveringone'sselfintheprocess.He
exploresthesethemesinSlur.

Theword‘slur’hasmanydifferentdefinitions.Oneis"aderogatorytermbased
uponaperson’sperceivedidentity."Inotherwords,itreferstosomeonebasedon
whatorwhotheythinkthatpersonis.Anothermeaningoftheword‘slur’istotalk
withyourwordsrunningtogetherinawaythatmakesithardforotherstohearor
understandthemeaningortruthofwhatisbeingsaid.Finally,‘slur’isatermin
Music.Amusicalslurisasymbolthatconnectstwoormorenotesinsuchaway
thattheyareplayedrightafteroneanother,allowingnopausebetweenthem.
‘Slur’goesbackaboutfourcenturiestothemiddleEnglishword‘slore’whichmeant
“totrailinmud.”TherearerelatedwordsinolderformsofGerman,Dutchand
Norwegian,allhavingmeaningsrelatedtocarelessnessorcorruption.Themusical
usageofthewordarosearound1746,andtheapplicationofthewordtomuddy

Adolescenceisthelastperiodofrapidgrowthbeforeadulthood.Itlastsfromage12
toage22,thoughwegenerallythinkofitastheearlyteenyears.Adolescenceisa
periodofgrowingindependence,risk-taking,adesireforbelonging,andan
increasedawarenessofinjustice.Itisatimeforformingidentity,or,really,
identities.Anadolescentdevelopspersonalidentity–howsheseesherself–and
socialidentity–howothersseeher.Often,shehastoreconcilethesedifferent
views,andthedifferentaspectsofherpersonalitythatmightseemtobeinconflict.
Forexample,intheplay,Daisyhastoreconcileherdifferentidentitiesasastudent,
afriend,aModelUNmember,aMuslim,aworkerinthefamilybusiness,avictim,

“ThosePeople”–Stereotypes
Astereotypeisapredeterminedfixedideaaboutsomeonebasedontheirperceived
identity.ExamplesofstereotypesincludethebeliefthatallAsiansdowellinschool,
orthatallMuslimsareterrorists.Stereotypescancauseharmtopeoplebylimiting
theirabilitytochoosewhotheyare.Forexample,inonesceneinSLUR,acharacter
namedMargoiscalledan"AngryGothGirl"whichdiminishesherabilityandpower
tostandupforherselfasanindividual.Sheisseenasangrybyothersforcalling
attentiontothewayboysatherschooljudgegirlsbasedontheirlooks.Insteadof
tryingtounderstandherpoint-of-view,theboysdismissherasjealousandugly.

Microaggressionsareaformofoppression.Theyareeverydayandmostly
unintentionalcommentsthatsendoffensivemessagestominorities.Theyusually
includesubconsciousstereotypesabouttheminority.Forexample,ifyoutella
personofLatinAmericandescentthattheyspeakEnglishwell,youmighthave
simplywantedtocomplimenttheirEnglish,butitimpliesthattheylearnedEnglish
asasecondlanguageandyouassumedtheyspokeSpanishjustbythewaythey
look.Itmightbetrue,buttheirfamilyalsocouldhavebeenintheUnitedStatesfor
anynumberofgenerations.There'sagoodexampleofamicroaggressionearlyin
Slur,whenLouisasays‘jihadist’means‘terrorist.’Sheprobablymeansitinnocently
andiscompletelyunawarethatjihadisthedailystruggletobeagoodMuslimand
thatajihadistisjustsomeonewho'stryingtodothat.Anothermicroaggressionin
theplayiswhenMr.ForresterpronouncedKwame'snamewrong.Itcouldhave
beenanhonestmistake,butitmadeKwamefeelsingledoutanddifferent.While
Mr.Forresterfeltlikehehadn’tdoneanythingwrong,theoppressionisfoundinthe
factthathedoesn’ttrytolearnhowtopronounceanamethatisstrangetohim.

struggletohonorAllahinallonedoes,itisofteninterpretedtomean“holy
