BVLS eDay Lesson Grade Level: 7 Course: 7th language arts Lesson Overview & Purpose: (L.7.4) Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 7 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. Teacher Name: Marshall/Rice Learning Target Addressed: I can recognize and define common Greek and Latin affixes and roots. I can verify my inferred meaning of an unknown word by consulting general and specialized reference materials. Learning Task 1: Go to studyisland.com. Complete 15 questions on each of the following categories: Context Clues, Multiple Meaning Words, Roots and Affixes. Record your score and return scores to your teacher. Learning Task 2: Using your Greek and Latin reference guide in your binder and your vocabulary word lists, find five vocabulary words for which you can determine the Greek or Latin root (and possible prefix and suffix) meanings. Taking what you know, explain how the definition of the word makes sense using these meanings. Ex. Let’s say “astrology” was a vocab word. The Greek stem “astro” means “star.” The Greek stem “ology” or “logy” means “study of” or “science of.” Hence, the meaning of astrology is the study of the stars. Turn your paper in to your teacher when you return to school (you may put your Study Island scores on this same paper, as well). Resources needed: studyisland.com Greek and Latin reference guide (under the resources section in your binder) Quarterly vocab lists Additional Notes Last Updated: 01/14
