Intended Grade Level: Gr. 9-12
Course Summary:
Music FUN-damentals – This course is designed for students with an interest in studying the fundamentals
of music. By completing this course, students will be exposed to the basics of written music notation,
including written and aural assessments on note names, scales, triads, seventh chords, and compositional
skills. Students who have taken this course should be well prepared for a course in college music theory.
Course Outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will know:
How to identify pitches, scales, triads, seventh chords, and compositional skills
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate their knowledge of music theory through written and aural assessments on pitch

Chapter 1: Reading Music in Treble and Bass
Clef
Students will learn to identify and write pitches on
the music staff in both treble and bass clef.
Chapter 2: Pitch Duration
Students will learn the values and identification of
various note durations including whole notes, half
notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, etc… Students
will be able to identify time signatures, measures,
bar lines, rhythms & countings, rest values, ledger
lines, the grand staff, dotted half notes, dotted
quarter notes and ties/slurs.
Chapter 3: Music Symbols
Students will learn music terms and symbols such
as a whole step, half step, sharps, flats, naturals,
accidentals, and enharmonic pitches.
Chapter 4: Tetrachords & Major Scales
Students will be able to aurally and visually identify
and write tetrachords and major scales.
Chapter 5: Key Signatures & the Circle of
Fifths
Students will be able to identify and notate sharp
and flat key signatures and the Circle of Fifth

Chapter 6: Chromatic Scale
Students will be able to identify and notate
chromatic scales.
Chapter 7: Repeat signs, 1st & 2nd endings,
Codas
Students will be able to identify and notate repeat
signs, 1st & 2nd endings, D.C., D.S., Fine, and
Codas.
Chapter 8: Dynamics, Tempos, Articulations
Students will be able to identify, notate, and define
various dynamics, tempos, and articulations present
in music.
Chapter 9: Sixteenth Notes, Sixteenth Rests,
and Dotted Eighth Notes
Students will be able to count, identify, and notate
sixteenth notes, sixteenth rests, and dotted eighth
notes.
Chapter 10: Intervals
Students will be able to identify and notate major,
minor, augmented, and diminished intervals.
Chapter 11: Complex Time Signatures
Students will be able to identify, count, and clap
rhythms in the 3/8, 6/8, 9/8, 12/8, 4/4, and 2/2
time signatures.
Chapter 12: Triads
Students will be able to identify and notate major,
minor, augmented, and diminished triads.
Chapter 13: Minor Scales
Students will be able to identify and notate natural,
harmonic, and melodic minor scales.
Chapter 14: Harmonizing a Melody
Students will experiment with common chord
progressions and harmonizing a melody in major
and minor keys.
Advanced Learner Recommendations
Students should consider studying their primary instrument with a private teacher for more advanced
musical training which would enhance their knowledge of music theory. Students can receive additional
assignments from college music theory textbooks that extend the knowledge of our theory workbooks.
Struggling Learner Recommendations
Students who struggle would be offered music theory flashcards and study guides for assignments.
Students can seek assistance during flex or after school by appointment.
