Muscat Governorate
Muscat Governorate is one of the three governorates in Sultanate of Oman. Muscat city,
which is the capital city of Sultanate of Oman, is in the region. It is considered as one of
the cleanest cities in the world. Muscat Governorate covers a land area of 3900 square
km. Muscat has a distinct history. Port at Muttrah has been functioning since 6th century
BC. Muscat became the capital of an independent Oman when the present dynasty
assumed power in 1741. Its growth was greatly accelerated in the 20th century, following
the discovery of crude oil reserves in Arabia and the accession to the throne by present
the present ruler Sultan His Majesty Qaboos bin Said.

A wide range of climatic conditions can be expected in Muscat. Muscat is pleasantly
warm in the winter months from October to March, but in summer is hot and very humid.
There is little rain throughout the year.
Population:
As per the latest Census 2003, Muscat Governorate is having a population of 632,073
(Source: Ministry of National economy, Sultanate of Oman). In terms of population, the
Muscat Governorate is ranked second in the country. Total density of population is 162.1
per km2. Compare to other regions in the Sultanate Muscat Governorate is having the
higher proportion expatriate population. As per 2003 census, 39.6% of the total
population of the region is expatriates. Immigration is high due to lot of employment
opportunities in the region. Majority of the immigrant are from the Asian sub continent.
Administrative Setup
Region is sub divided in to six Wilayats for administrative purposes and they are,

Muscat Wilayat.
2.
Muttrah Wilayt.
3.
Bawshar Wilayat.
4.
As Seeb Wilayat.
5.
Al Amerat Wilayat.
6.
Quriyat Wilayt.
AsSeeb wilayat is the most densely populated Wilayat in the region with a total
population of 223,449.
Health Care
Quality of life and health care system in the region is excellent and is comparable to that
of western world. Life expectancy at birth is more than 73 for the region. Children are
well protected against child hood diseases.
Communicable surveillance system is
excellent in the region.
Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health, Muscat Governorate is the
major health care provider in the region. Now many private health institutions too are
involved in providing health care facilities to public.
In the government sector (with MOH), there are 6 hospitals, 3 specialized centers and 23
primary health centers. In the private sector, more than 300 clinics are providing health
care facilities in the region.
Total number of in patient bed available in the region is 1985. MOH is having 1296 beds,
Non-MOH institutions like Army, Police and University hospitals are having 601 beds. In
the private sector, there are 88 in patient beds.
There are 14 doctors and 44.7 nurses per 10,000 population in Muscat region (source:
Annual Health Report, 2003- MoH).
Upper respiratory system (3595 per 10,000 population) is the major morbid condition.
Economy
Being an economic capital of the country Muscat Governorate is the hub for all economic
activities. Fisheries and agriculture are two major traditional economic activity of the
region.
Infrastructure
Main strategy of ministry of housing is to provide the ideal and healthy residence and the
basic services to residences. As per 2003 census there are 118,473 housing units.
Transport
The international airport of the country is situated at Seeb. Oman is well connected with
rest of the world by various international flights. Limited domestic flights, provided by
Oman Air, connect to Salalah, Sur, Khasab and Masirah Island.
The city of Muscat has a comprehensive bus and taxi services. There's frequent intercity
bus transportation.
Water system
Muscat metropolitan area is supplied with adequate water distribution and sewerage
systems.
