Earth II Vocabulary Words
Law of Superposition: a basic law stating that any undisturbed
sequence of rocks deposited in layers, the youngest layer is on top
and the oldest layer on the bottom.
Relative Age: a comparison of age of a fossil organism, rock, or
geologic feature based on which is older or younger than some other
object or event.
Relative Dating: Science of determining the relative order of past
events without necessarily determining their absolute age.
Absolute Age: true age of a rock or fossil, tells scientists the number of
years ago a rock layer was formed.
Absolute Dating: process of determining an age on a specific time
scale in archaeology and geology.
Radioactive Dating: technique used to date materials such as rocks or
carbon.
Unconformity: a discontinuity in rock sequence indicating interruption
of sedimentation, commonly accompanied by erosion of rocks below
the break.
