Course objectives
This course addresses orthodontists, periodontists and general dentists who intend to
learn more about the current concepts of orthodontic/periodontic interdisciplinary
treatment.
Orthodontic tooth movement implies adaptation of the periodontal tissues. Orthodontic treatment may thereby support periodontal treatment but can also aggravate
the periodontal situation, in case of uncontrolled tooth movement combined with
an inflamed periodontium. Today a large number of adult patients is seeking orthodontic treatment. To achieve the best possible treatment to the individual patient,
orthodontists, periodontists and general dentists need to work in very close cooperation and thus must have a sound knowledge of physiologic and pathologic periodontal conditions and the possibilities of each specialty to influence them.
