THE FIVE THEMES OF
GEOGRAPHY

Location
Place
Human-Environment Interaction
Movement
Regions
LOCATION
Where are we?
• Absolute Location
– A latitude and longitude
(global location) or a
street address (local
location).
– Paris France is 48o North
Latitude and 2o East
Longitude.
– The White House is
located at 1600
Pennsylvania Ave.
• Relative Location
– Described by landmarks,
time, direction or
distance. From one place
to another.
– Go 1 mile west on main
street and turn left for 1
block.
PLACE
What is it like there, what kind of place is it?
• Human
• Physical
Characteristics
Characteristics
• What are the main
languages, customs, and
beliefs.
• How many people live,
work, and visit a place.
• Landforms (mountains,
rivers, etc.), climate,
vegetation, wildlife, soil,
etc.
All places have characteristics that give them
meaning and character and distinguish them
from other places on earth.
Macchu Picchu
Zocalo
Places have both human and
physical characteristics.
Physical
characteristics
include things
that occur
naturally, such as
mountains, rivers,
and Wildlife.
Grand Tetons
Human
Characteristics
are things that
have changed
due to people,
such as roads
and buildings.
Tulum
How Did
The Maya
Change
Their
Environment
Here?
HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT
INTERACTION
• How do humans and the environment affect
each other?
– We depend on it.
• People depend on the Tennessee River for water and
transportation.
– We modify it.
• People modify our environment by
heating and cooling buildings for comfort.
– We adapt to it.
• We adapt to the environment by wearing
clothing suitable for summer (shorts) and
winter (coats), rain and shine.
HumanEnvironment
Interaction is the
relationship
between people
and their
environment and
how they work
together.
The Golden
Gate Bridge
is an example
of how we
interact with
our
environment
to help us get
from one
place to
another.
When
humans
interact with
their
environment
there can be
positive and
negative
results.
Inca Terraces
They were able to grow
food even though they
lived in the Mountains!
The Incas
building
terraces in
the Andes
Mountains is
an example
of how
humans can
interact with
their
environment
in a positive
way.
Humans can also
interact with their
environment in
negative ways.
Over Crowding!
Dumping Waste!
Humans have interacted with their
environment for many years.
Do you think
the Inuit
used. . .
The Inuit for
example
used what
they had
within their
environment
to build a
home.
Trees ?
Rocks?
Mud and
Grass?
Ice and Snow!
Or . . .
MOVEMENT
• How are people, goods, ideas moved from place
to place?
– Human Movement
• Trucks, Trains, Planes
– Information Movement
• Phones, computer (email), mail
– Idea Movement
• How do fads move from place to place?
TV, Radio, Magazines
The
patterns of
movement
of people,
products,
and
information
is another
theme of
Geography.
The First
Americans
coming across
the Bering
Strait around 30
thousand years
ago is an
example of
movement. . .
Why did
they come
here?
They were
following their
food!
Trading goods
with other
groups around
the world is
another
example of
Movement.
We sell cars to many
Countries around the
world (Exports).
We buy
many goods
from other
Countries
(Imports).
This is another
example of
movement.
REGIONS
• How are Regions similar to and different from other
places?
– Formal Regions
• Regions defined by governmental or administrative boundaries (States,
Countries, Cities)
• Regions defined by similar characteristics (Corn Belt, Rocky Mountain
region, Chinatown).
– Functional Regions
• Regions defined by a function (newspaper service area, cell phone
coverage area).
– Vernacular Regions (Not in your book)
• Regions defined by peoples perception (middle east, the south, etc.)
Formal Regions are those defined by governmental or
administrative boundaries ( Countries, Cities,Counties, Etc.)
Russia
United
States
Brazil
Australia
Can you name
these Countries?
We study many
different categories
including language,
political divisions,
religions, and
vegetation that we
can group into
Regions.
Here are the Vegetation
Zones of Canada. One
Way a Place Can Be
Divided Into Regions.
We can also divide a region into sections of Language.
Native
Languages
English
French
What are some of the
Languages spoken in
Canada?
Here is one way Canada is divided.
What do they call these Regions?
Provinces
And
Territories!
Remembering the 5 themes
• If you can’t remembering what
they are just ask MR. HELP!!!
• M – Movement
• R – Regions
• HE – Human Environment
interaction
• L – Location
• P - Place
