Job Summary
The Web Content Administrator is responsible for developing and providing content and
design for the web site(s) of an organizational unit. The Web Content Administrator
performs as editor of the site for a department or program whose communication
requirements require a full-time web communicator, or may serve as a second level web
content developer at the college, campus, or university level. This position applies technical
and professional communications skills to create content that will motivate users to access
the site and use it as a source of information and access to tools.
Nature of Work
This position will report to an administrator for a department, program area, or other unit
with complex web-based communication requirements. Typical titles of supervisors include
Director, Associate or Assistant Director, Program Director, or Assistant Program Director.
The Web Content Administrator job requires a professional background in the
development of text and content for technology, including the ability to write and edit
copy, incorporate elements of graphic design, and build appealing and useable
applications. A key accountability of this position is to determine the communication
requirements of the unit, and to develop the overall web strategy to meet the unit’s
communication goals.
While the primary purpose of this position is development and presentation of
communication content, this position requires a combination of technical knowledge and
skill in written and graphic communication. The Web Content Administrator must be
able to apply knowledge of web applications to create web pages, working with IT resources
to resolve performance issues such as speed of access and ease of use. The Web Content
Administrator will be familiar and able to apply the functionality of web software and
graphics applications, such as (but not limited to) HTML, DreamWeaver, FrontPage,
Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and Macromedia tools. The Web Content
Administrator will apply public relations and technical writing skills as required to meet
the communication requirements for the unit, and may also be responsible for and/or
participate in the development of print copy, visuals, or audio-visual content for general
communication projects.
Examples of Duties
The following list provides examples of the most typical duties for positions in this job

include all of the work that may be assigned to positions in this job class.
• Defines the web communications strategy for unit, consistent with the overall
communication and public relations strategy for the campus or college, and the
university system.
• Designs and manages the content and graphic design elements for web sites
supporting the unit. Responsible for content and technical development,
implementation and maintenance of sites, coordinating site links, and uploading
material to servers.
• Writes and edits information for web site.
• Maintains and updates information regularly to ensure currency of information.
• Applies consistent web standards and guidelines for style, content, and code
consistent with university computer use policies, and relevant regulatory
requirements.
• Acts as Project Manager for all website revisions and web communication initiatives
for the unit.
• Evaluates usability and utilization of web pages, implementing planned
improvements based on user feedback.
• Works with Information Technology department staff on technical issues and
requirements.
• Supports other print and media communication projects for the unit as required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in communication, public relations, technical
writing, digital media, information technology, or related field, with two years of
experience in related positions; or a Master’s degree in the fields listed above. Appropriate
college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for
the required experience.
