Thursday 23 September 2010 STRING NOTES AUTUMNN TERM - WEEK 18 Dear parents and carers, Today We are learning lots of new things at the moment – how to use the 1st finger to play the note E on the D string, how to use 1st, 2nd and 3rd fingers to make a scale or musical ladder, how to join notes together with the bow by ‘slurring’ the notes, how to help the notes to sound ‘in tune,’ and also how to start to read traditional musical notation. There are pieces and tasks to help with all of these things. During the Week On the back of this sheet are some of the pieces and tasks that we did in the lesson. Trying these every day at home will help fingers and arms to get used to the actions and feelings so that they gradually become easier and more manageable. Some of the pieces can be played with the CD backing track. It is always a good idea to finish a session of practise (that might be quite hard work!) with something fun, and easy and already known. There are lots of open string bowing pieces for this on the CD using the music sheets previously provided. To make things different – pupils can try playing them with different bowing patterns. Try adding some slurs! – or try playing loudly or quietly to see if this changes how the piece sounds. For Next Week A reminder that as our learning progresses, practising a little at home (every day if possible) and committing to coming to the Mini V ensemble each week will help everyone make progress together and get the most out of the opportunity. Best wishes Sue, Louise and Shirley Practise notes for Week 18 Warm Up With some bowing patterns on open strings – choose your own.
