Group Cancer Cover from Aviva
Cancer can affect anyone at any time. By 2020, nearly half of Britons are
likely to be diagnosed with the disease at some point during their life*.
Thankfully, with medical advances people are now more likely to survive
cancer, but they often suffer both emotionally and financially. By choosing
Group Cancer cover from Aviva, we help protect employees financially,
making money one less worry.

Features of our
Group Cancer Cover
Group Cancer Cover is available to all eligible
employees and provides:
• Fixed lump sum benefit of £25,000 to the member,
payable on diagnosis of cancer, as defined in the policy
conditions, provided the member survives for at least
14 days.
Second and Subsequent Cancer
We provide an optional benefit that employers can select
at policy set up, which provides some cover for employees
who have been previously diagnosed with cancer. A benefit
would be payable for a diagnosis of a new, unrelated
cancer as defined by the policy terms.
For full details please see our Policy terms and conditions
and Technical Guide.

RedArc
We’re offering RedArc’s services to members and their
families who take out Group Cancer Cover and go on to
make a claim. We understand that it can be a difficult time
for members to talk about their diagnosis. So they don’t
have to talk to RedArc straight away. They don’t have to
talk to them at all. It’s up to them. If members and their
families decide to use RedArc, everything they need will
be in one place. They’ll have one point of contact- their
personal nurse adviser- who brings all the services together.
The service provided at the point of claim with Aviva
includes:
• A nurse telephone advice service that provides emotional
and practical support when dealing with a cancer
diagnosis.
• Access to a personal nurse adviser who will take the time
to understand the member’s diagnosis and talk to them
about what they’re going through.
• Malignant melanoma skin cancer that is confined to the

When won’t the cover
pay out?
A claim for benefit will not be paid if:
• Will I get better?
• Is my diagnosis correct?
• Is the treatment I have been recommended the most
appropriate or is there an alternative?
• the diagnosis of cancer does not meet the definition
Best Doctors achieves this by offering an expert second
medical opinion from its database of 53,000 peer-reviewed
specialists, helping members get a definitive diagnosis and
a clear treatment plan.

Added value services continued
Stress Helpline
The 24/7 Stress Helpline provided by Care first gives
employees access to an ‘in the moment’ helpline handled
by BACP accredited counsellors that assists callers with
regaining some sense of control when overwhelmed. This
is achieved by providing on the spot support, which allows
callers space to ‘offload’ and gain new perspective. This
one-off counselling facility provides practical strategies
and caller ‘empowerment’ not just to feel better but to do
something about the situation they face.
Multiproduct discount
Employees will have exclusive discounts available to them
on other Aviva products such as home and travel insurance.
Get Active
Employees will have up to 25% off gym membership from
a range of top UK health clubs.
Full details on these discounts can be found in our guide
‘Healthy discounts for Group Protection Customers’.
These services are non-contractual benefits that can
be withdrawn by Aviva at any time without notice.
Eligible dependants include the member’s spouse/
partner and any children (including legally adopted
children and stepchildren).

Your questions answered
Why does this product only cover cancer?
What is the tax treatment?
Many employers want to provide benefits that are valued
by their employees, but budget constraints mean, an
employer-funded critical illness product isn’t always viable.
Our Group Cancer Cover policy is financed by the employer
with no contribution from employees. Our understanding is
that the cost to the employer is allowed as a trading expense,
and lump sum benefits are paid tax-free (under current
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) practice) to the member.
Cancer claims make up approximately 70% of all critical
illness claims1. There are around two million people living
with a cancer diagnosis in the UK. This is set to rise to four
million by 20302.
As well as the obvious health concerns, a cancer diagnosis
brings with it additional financial implications. Group
Cancer Cover provides much-needed financial support for
members in this situation.
Group Cancer Cover also offers employers a simple,
cost‑effective solution.
Why Cancer Cover?
The Group Cancer Cover benefit is designed to help
members meet the everyday, incremental costs associated
with a cancer diagnosis. The costs can include travel
to medical appointments and increased heating bills,
as well as helping to offset the possibility of a loss
of income.
The premiums the employer pays are a ‘benefit in kind’ for
the members, and are taxed under the PAYE system. HMRC
does not normally grant tax relief on premiums paid for
any members with a proprietorial interest in the company.
However, it may sometimes grant tax relief provided a
substantial number of other employees are entitled to
similar benefits. We recommend you get clarification from
your local Inspector of Taxes.
HMRC rules around taxation of benefits and premiums may
change in the future.
How can I find out more about the Group
Cancer Cover?

How do the exclusions differ between Group
Cancer Cover and Group Critical Illness Cover?
The exclusions differ due to the complete removal of
the associated condition exclusion (that exists on Group
Critical Illness products).
The design of Group Cancer Cover makes it easy for the
employee to know if they’re eligible, or if they should opt
out. The simplification of the exclusion should make the
decision straight forward for the employee.
Who is this product available to?
We offer Group Cancer Cover to all employers
with 50 or more eligible members. Eligibility must
be clearly defined. There is no restriction on nature of
business, regardless of occupation.
What industry types will we quote for?
We will provide quotations for all industry types.
