In 2013 Sadler’s Wells’ building marked 15 years of operation. Since the Autumn of that year,
the theatre has been carrying out a repair and refurbishment project, scheduled to finish in
Summer 2015. This includes an overhaul of the existing powered flying control system,
including new water-based cooling and bringing existing fixed speed bars under control of the
automation system; reupholstering seats and carpets at all auditorium levels; redecoration of
public areas and installation of energy efficient lighting – including a new main entrance door;
installation of a LED based house-light system in the main auditorium; full replacement of
existing dimmers and lighting control cabling; new air-con plant and additional energy saving
measures such as new sash windows and photo-voltaic cells.
This has taken place alongside a rolling replacement and upgrade programme of theatrical
equipment. The bulk of this work took place over summer 2014 and Sadler’s Wells re-opened
its doors after just a six week dark period.
