BP2LHK PALEMBANG AND GIZ-BIOCLIME JOINT EXPOSE
“Forest Management to Support Green Development in South
Sumatra”
Palembang, 1 September 2016
To disseminate data and information on the outcomes of joint research by the Palembang
Environment and Forestry Research and Development Agency (BP2LHK) with BIOCLIME
(Biodiversity and Climate Change) in relation to measuring carbon stock and biodiversity in
South Sumatra, the two institutions held a joint expose on Thursday, 1 September 2016 at
the Hotel Grand Zuri in Palembang. With the theme “Forest Management to Support Green
Development in South Sumatra”, the activity was geared toward its outcomes becoming
materials for policy recommendations for the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) or
for regional policy for the advancement of environmental and forestry development.
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) and the South Sumatra Provincial
Government have undertaken various emissions reduction efforts, particularly from the
forestry sector and peatlands, both on their own initiative and through a framework of
international cooperation. To achieve its objective, one activity was collecting baseline data
and information on carbon stock and biodiversity in various forest types in South Sumatra.
This data and information was not only necessary for determining project baselines for the
BIOCLIME program, but was also needed by the South Sumatra Provincial Government for
preparing a regional forestry sector greenhouse gas action plan (RAD-GRK) to support the
Government of Indonesia’s emissions reduction target, and South Sumatra’s green
development program.
In addition, the Palembang Environment and Forestry Research and Development Agency
(BP2LHK), as the research institution under KLHK, is expected to play a role in
strengthening forest management to encourage green development in South Sumatra. Since
2002, the Palembang BP2LHK has conducted research into silviculture, forest protection,
conservation and social economics and policies, the outcomes of which are expected to be
used by decision makers to support green development in South Sumatra.

Implementation Units (UPTs) and Forest Management Units (KPHs) in South Sumatra
province, research and development institutions, extensions officers, farmer groups,
practitioners, academics and NGOs.
