Computer Definitions Study Guide
Internet/Software
Refresh Rate – The number of times per minute that a computer CRT monitor screen image
is renewed. A fast refresh rate makes a screen easier to view and is much better for your
eyes. Good monitors have a refresh rate of 70 to 75 hertz per second or higher.
Operating System – Software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate
and operate with the computer software.
Software - A collection of instructions that enables a user to interact with the computer or
have the computer perform specific tasks for them. Without any type of software the
computer would be useless.
Browser - A software program that allows person to explore the Internet in an easy to use
way. Navigating the Internet through a series of links the user is able to 'browse' the
Internet. Examples of popular browsers are Internet Explorer and Firefox.
ISP (Internet Service Provider) – Who you pay for Internet access.
IP Address - Short for Internet Protocol, IP is an address of a computer or other network
device on a network using IP or TCP/IP . For example, the number "166.70.10.23" is an
example of such an address. These addresses are similar to addresses used on houses and
help data reach its appropriate destination on a network.
Search Engine – Software program or script available through the Internet that searches
various types of documents for keywords; and if found, returns the documents containing
those keywords.
HTTP - Short for HyperText Transfer Protocol, HTTP is a set of standards that let users of
the World Wide Web to exchange information found on web pages. When a user wishes to
access a web page it is commonly required that http:// be placed before the address,
allowing the browser to know it is going through HTTP.
HTTPS - Short for Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer, HTTPS is a secure
method of accessing web page information and/or sending information across a web
page. Instead of sending the data as plaintext, the information is first encrypted and then
sent, improving the overall security.
FTP - Short for File Transfer Protocol, FTP is a standard way to transfer files between
computers. The method has built-in error checking. FTP often refers to a standard way of
transferring many types of files over the Internet.
HTML - short for HyperText Markup Language and is a language used to create electronic
documents, especially pages on the World Wide Web, that contain connections called
hyperlinks to other pages.

URL - Short for Uniform Resource Locator, URL is a form of URI and is a standardized
naming convention for addressing documents accessible over the Internet or Intranet.
Hyperlink - An Icon, graphic, or word in a document that links to another file or object.
Web Server - Computer or collection of computers used to deliver web pages and other
content to multiple users.
Internet - Also known as the net or the web, the Internet was initially developed by the
IPTO with the intention of helping to develop the progress of computing technology by
linking the work being done by all the best academic computer centers.
The Internet contains billions of web pages created by people and companies from around
the world, making it a limitless location to locate information and entertainment. It is also
full of numerous services that help make life more convenient.
Intranet - Local Internet generally belonging to a corporation or organization that allows a
select few members access to the pages and is protected from any other users not part of
that intranet.
Download - Process of retrieving data from another computer, either over a network or
modem. Each page you visit on the Internet you download to your computer first. The term
download is often associated with downloading a software program from the Internet that
can be installed and ran on your computer.
Upload - Process of transferring (sending) a file to another computer through a modem or
network.
Virus - A software program, script, or macro that has been designed to infect, destroy,
modify, or cause other problems with a computer or software programs.
Anti-virus – Software designed to protect your computer and/or network against computer
viruses. If and when a virus is detected, the computer will generally prompt you that a virus
has been found, and ask what action should be done such as deleting the virus.
