Human Rights Council Religious persecution and endangerment Religious persecution is the mistreatment of a person or a group of people based on their beliefs or lack there of. This is a problem that has been happening for centuries and has become a recurring theme in society, unfortunately this usually through violence toward other religions. Most religions have been persecuted at some point in time; it is a problem that takes place all over the world. Religious genocide is still a problem that is not always acknowledged. The Middle East and Palestine are currently a hot bed for religious persecution. It has resulted in a large amount of violence toward all religions in that area. Israel settler violence against Palestinians is consistently rising, since 2006 settler attacks have quadrupled. The settlers continue to diminish because of the lack of support from the Palestinian police. Christianity in the Middle East has extremely decreased due to the northern Iraq offence which started with Christians either having to pay a fee, leave, convert to Islam, or die. Jihadists then changed the requirements to either leave or die. After 9/11 American Muslims were persecuted in the United States because of the actions of Islamic extremists. Though the actions weren’t very violent, Americans put down and treated American Muslims very terribly. Though these are just a few places and incidents, religious persecution has taken place all over the world and has been going on for centuries. Questions to Consider: 1. How can religious persecution be stopped? 2. How are these religious genocides affecting the other citizens? 3. Why is religious persecution happening?
